Looking for a rental

Hi everyone,

I am not having much luck finding a place to rent in Southern NH on FB or Craigslist, apartments.com, etc. This experience has been so draining for me.

Looking anywhere within 45 min of Exeter.

I have 2 small dogs, one is a retired service dog. My budget is up to $1800 a month but preferably a bit less. Prefer not to move to Mass but would consider Maine.

I’ve paid so much in application fees already and am getting hounded with emails from all the different sites so honestly would prefer private rental.

My rental history is good but I have a 2 year gap as I lived on a farm as a caretaker for the animals in exchange for rent in between my last apartment and now.

Does anyone have any leads or suggestions for where to search?

Very hard to find housing, especially rentals, on the seacoast. I see on neren.com that there are several mobile homes for sale in Exeter that would likely be within your budget, especially if you can put something down. Some are darn decent looking. Just a thought.

If it were me, I would talk to the farm owner about getting a good reference. That is a rental history. You were just bartering/working to pay rent rather than working in cash. I would set a cash price on my labor, and then put that in the application when asked. I'd talk to the farm owner about that as well, so he or she would know if called by a landlord.

I'd search by asking friends and family, asking people at church, and asking on Facebook groups.

Great advice! I Will definitely ask about the reference with the farm owner for that and will ask some of my local community groups on fb!
