In Jan. I got pulled over and had forgot to register my vehicle, stupidly (had it inspected but did not renew registration). Cop was super nice about it but gave me a ticket that I paid on time. My registration expired in October.

Not to try and make excuses and not that people really care, but money has been tight. I put off registering it after paying this ticket. I'm going in tomorrow to finally sort it. Am I in for a major fine registering it a few months after that ticket? I legitimately forgot and feel terrible, worried. It's entirely my fault too. Just want to know what I'm in for when I re-register it. Thanks to anyone who has insight or has been in this scenario or something similar.

The ticket was your additional fine. There shouldn’t be any other penalties when you go in to register.

Source: I completely spaced on registering my car after a move and got a ticket for being 6 months behind on registering it.

One other note (if you weren’t already aware) is that the registration month is usually based on your birthday month. This just means that you’ll need to renew again in October.

Thanks for this. I was a moron and thought the inspection sufficed without registering it again in my town lol.

There's no fine, but they will bill you for the renewal all the way back to the date of expiration. So you'll still have to pay a full year of registration even though you waited (and got a ticket). I always thought that was BS.

That's lame, so basically I pay for the year (Oct-Mar) and then another year on top of that and it only counts for this year? Weird.

Not as lame as not paying your registration in the first place.

Having an incurable disease isn't a free pass to walk around being a prick to everyone, sorry.

I mean, if you paid it in the first place, you wouldn't be in this pickle now though. Unless you're 16 and just started driving or you're brand new to the state, your ignorance of the law here is kind of mind-boggling

Well like, when did your previous registration expire?

Mindless-Narwhal7974 OP t1_je7wxfa wrote

Late October 2022. So it's been expired for about 5 months or so.

Okay so yes, unless there's been a change, they'll make you pay basically the same amount as you would have for a whole year if you'd renewed last October, but your renewed reg will only be good through October 2024.

This may have changed but I don't think it has. And maybe there's a cutoff I'm not aware of. They screw you over on the basis of assuming you've been driving anyway so you have to pay for it. Basically they frame it as billing you for all of those months you've been driving without having registered. Really sucks when money is already tight. Hopefully I'm wrong about this and they've changed the policy but just so you know going in.

No, you pay for November to the following October, regardless of when in the year you pay it. You’ll be paying for it to be registered for 2023 this time, and then come October, you’ll be paying for 2024. There are no late fees, though, so there’s that.

Just know you're lucky they just gave you a ticket because they can tow your car when pulled over for an expired registration.

Clerk is likely to not even question it. You’ll just need to pay the full amount.

Your town doesn’t send out a notice via paper mail? I re-register my vehicles online and get the new reg sent to me

Just curious - how did you inspect it with an expired registration? I thought mechanics required a current registration to do an inspection.

MethBearBestBear t1_jeaeak3 wrote

You can get it inspected up to 4 months before your registration expires to cover the next year. So he could have had it inspected anytime between July and October on the active registration

B1ggestsport t1_jea2023 wrote

Was thinking the same thing, but if they got it inspected the same month it was due then last year's registration should still have been valid
