Eversource's backend payment system accepts most major bank epayments. Pay and go. Liberty Utilities use to over the past decade until their recent "system upgrade" in October. Now they don't accept payments from many financial institutions. frustrating. Whatever.

I still can't even log into my online account. It just spins forever. Doesn't matter what browser I use. The phone app 'sort of' works. I also just got my first bill from them since last September just last week! I ended up paying with a credit card over the phone. Their shit is fucked.

I don’t like them either but if you just pay by eCheck it’s fine. No fee. And you just don’t save the account info. I have to manually enter it every time which I will always take over letting a company save my checking info.

Since the “new and improved” change went into affect, had nothing but problems. Never had a single issue before. Now i am having to make my payment 10 days before due date to ensure I don’t get a “previous balance” show up on following bill.

All those other methods are arguably anti consumer, designed to provide additional revenue to the company via processing fees or late fees(possibly). The only non fee method requires the consumer go out of their way to a retail location, in person which let's be honest, most people in 2023 won't do. That they removed the more convenient, fee free, consumer friendly option says everything to me and I agree with the op.

That electric customers using a third party electricity vendors pay a premium of 4.8% or so in NH for electricity. That the predatory practices some electricity vendors use cost customers more. Sound like a good deal but the total cost of ownership is higher.

Vulture capitalism at its finest.

OP has an excellent point. Utilities should offer convenient, free payment options for customers. Payments should be posted immediately. Even the country's (allegedly) most hated utility in Maine offers free, convenient payment directly from a customer's checking account.

I know some people that work there… the new system sucks for the customer and the employee. The worst part is they wasted some much money on a’ new system’ that sucks. Eversource adopted the system sooner and is SUEING the company because the system is so crappy.

Also, their BS online payment system has a MAX payment of $600 PER DAY..... my bill is like $1000+ and I have to make several "scheduled" payments. Whomever sold them this portal can suck a fat one and also when emailing them to complain, they said "Send a Check then...." Total hot steaming pile of S**T

Im not opposed to fees in general - only when a business model is shaped in a way that makes it difficult to avoid paying late fees even as a responsible customer. Some banks handle it responsibly, some banks are predatory with fees.

I understand when a vendor passes along the costs of using a credit card and don't really have a problem with that. But if they were to make that the only method and then try to pass the costs along it would be a problem.

I don't, it's the cost of doing business. If you don't want to accept cards, you don't have to. But you will have an unhappy customer base as a result.

Lot of utilities do this now. Super annoying, their payment processor should be factored into the price IMO and I seriously doubt it costs them the $2-5 they all charge for it, but the situation you're describing isn't unusual.

If I remember correctly the 'convenience' fee shows up when you're paying but you're not actually charged it. It doesn't show up on your receipt when using eCheck. I registered my CC and attempted to pay with that when their new website first when live. The transaction would go through on their site then I'd get an email later saying the transaction failed.

Considering their website operates slower than websites in the dial-up era, I have no clue WTF they were thinking with this update.

I'll also whine that you can no longer pay multiple accounts at the same time. If you had multiple accounts (I'm a landlord) you used to be able to pay them all at once. Now I have to pay each one individually. Combine with the slow website and it's very frustrating. Use auto-pay you say? I don't trust them enough for that.
