So this was at a campground, so likely plumbing was involved, most of us would not think to filter that water, but wondering if a water filter would work to prevent?

Nothing you can do about it unfortunately. Just avoid their water altogether. Even the steam will infect you.

Legionnaires' disease is a serious form of pneumonia caused by exposure to legionella bacteria. It can be contracted by breathing in contaminated water droplets from the environment. It would be very difficult to prevent when camping.

My understanding is the Legionnaire's is caused by getting the water droplets in your LUNGS. So when the water or the plumbing has the bacteria present, and you shower there, water droplets are aerosolized and you breathe them in. It's not the drinking water, it's the *inhaled* water. If we are playing hypotheticals, I think you'd need to bring a sun shower type set up and filter the ingoing water.
