I would probably end up buying a lot of property and leaving it in a conservation trust. Honestly, I’ve always had a dream of buying a mall or some huge old factory, tearing it down, and making it into a park.

Realistically though, I’d make sure my family is all set, and do a lot of donating. Only keeping enough to live and maintain a comfortable, but not excessive, lifestyle.

That’s very fair, and I think a lot of folks will agree with that. A Ferrari would be cool, but a 911 has always been my thing. I think you could have and balance both without losing the middle ground.

In the end I would do my absolute best to stay anonymous, unfortunately that includes ‘hiding’ the scale of any newfound wealth from family. I’ve seen how excessive money ruins people, and want no part of that.

No. But it's a fun exercise. I'm taking the 930MM payout and after taxes your looking at pocketing 530MM. I'm skipping the annuity because I don't trust the government told hold nearly a Billion dollars of my money for 30 years. I'm taking 15MM and setting up a 30 year annuity for my parents and another 15MM in a 50 year annuity for the rest of my family to be administered by a arbitrator. I'd probably do 25MM in a 50 year for myself. So that leaves 475MM to try and convince the Blue Mountain Forest Association to sell me Corbins Park.

Give generously to some of the lesser known LGBTQIA charities, since they're almost always hurting for donations. Definitely a few mil to go to the Nature Conservancy and the Audubon Society. Maybe finally buy myself a house.

Low-Head-1493 t1_ivdsdin wrote

Well, first I’d hire someone to handle all of my finances. Then I’d buy a new car.

I’d buy land in NH, and also on the coast of Maine. I’d build a modest home, but well designed & with really nice materials.

I’d purchase the best mental health care on the East Coast that money can buy for my sibling who is mentally ill, and probably a therapy dog.

Since my sister thinks that she married rich I wouldn’t disabuse her of that notion, I’d just take my nephews on cool trips.

I’d want to support a bunch of family members anonymously & help them all retire comfortably.

I’d travel a lot & bounce around: purchase a couple small chalets & cabins in mountainous areas and/or near the ocean. Iceland, NZ, etc.

Definitely would want to donate to the National Parks & WMNF. Also would set up a foundation to help fund better mental health access.

On the more petty side of things: I’d buy out the Cog Railway guy and then immediately afterwards tell him to fuck off. Oh, and I would purchase billboards to shit-talk a few specific politicians & judges, making sure that the billboards would be visible on their daily commute. Figure out whatever I can donate $ to that would most spite the Koch brothers & just throw a bunch of money at it.

Then I’d jaunt off to India for a nice yoga retreat and never think about any of those fuckers again, because I’d be paying someone else to do that!

Lol it’s not too interesting. I just don’t like how Presby was angling to put a “luxury hotel” in the alpine zone and then (since that was poorly received) pivoted to proposing sleeper cars in an area they are calling Lizzie’s Station. I believe out of 18 cars 9 will hold up to 70 overnight guests, with fiber optic, bathrooms (yay more alpine sewage), and concession.

A little tea gets spilled here and here.

Currently there are 3-4 trains that go directly to the summit to unload (on the hour, I think) adding to the congestion (thousands of visitors) at the summit . The new plan says that only one car will go back and forth to unload at the summit, the rest will disembark at Lizzie’s Station (with passengers having the option to walk up to the summit or ride). The claim is that this development is a good thing, and will help with congestion.

I’m wondering how many back & forths the one car will do every hour (I assume the same amount as now, but who knows). I like how the chaos is currently solely contained to two ugly parking lots, a viewing deck, and the buildings/sign area. Walk past all that, hop over the tracks, and it’s fairly peaceful. The heavier flow of traffic is always going to Lake of the Clouds because it’s the closest real destination that someone hopping off a train or shuttle can reasonably “hike” to. With this there will be way more of a stream of people on the other side as well.

I’m pro-observatory and I’m all for encouraging people who wouldn’t normally engage with the outdoors to foster a connection to nature. That being said, I know how people use the summit and can predict what this expansion will do… I don’t think encouraging sprawl is beneficial. The dude can park cars at the bottom/create a hotel there… he just knows that’s not as glamorous/profitable.
