hate to be that guy but if she doesn’t have any equipment/gear she likely won’t survive the night if they don’t find her

It was six degrees Fahrenheit over night, unfortunately.

With wind chill, I read it got as low as -30. I know chances are slim, but I hope she is found safe. I can’t imagine how terrified she and her family must be.

still no update. she is likely dead. very unfortunate. there was a squall yesterday on lafayette, which is already an unrelenting mountain.

terrible night to be above tree line

For real. I was doing yard work today and the wind was absolutely brutal. Felt like 15-20 or something.
And that was mid-day in the sun.

This is so eerie. I was walking into work yesterday morning and because of the wind I knew I was short a layer. In that short walk, the wind was pulling the warmth from my body. I started to think about the book I read about Kate Matrosova getting caught above tree-line during a freak weather pattern in February. And then I started to think about how I would definitely not want to be tree line today (yesterday). The walk from my car to work was good enough for me.
I hope her fate is different than Kate’s.

Why do you say she is without a backpack? The article describes what she was wearing when she started her hike, but doesn’t say anything about not having a pack.

For what it’s worth I figure they probably go by the best witness statement without any other info, but I guess that doesn’t matter for us aside from hoping she had better gear packed somehow

Stop spreading lies that you have no evidence for. The situation is bad enough without trolls like you making shit up.

You wrote that the hiker doesn’t have a backpack. There is absolutely no evidence that she doesn’t have a backpack — zero news agencies have reported that — so your original post contains made-up shit to make the hiker look irresponsible and to inflame the online dialogue.

You’re reading into the absence of information. SAR reported only what her mom told them she was wearing when she started her hike. Just because SAR didn’t report other details doesn’t mean they weren’t provided. Do you think the only thing her mom told SAR is what she’s wearing? Of course not — her mom told SAR everything she knows. SAR isn’t going to report every single detail to the public. Thus, you have zero evidence that she doesn’t have a backpack and so your post is spreading misinformation that maligns the hiker. That is shitty.

Yeah that’s not exactly a quick hike.
Doesn’t say exactly when she was dropped off except it was “morning” but I’d wager it would have to be pretty early to ensure a realistic window of completing it during daylight hours.
I’m not nearly as experienced or in shape to give meaningful hiking advice, but I do know that I personally wouldn’t want to be navigating those peaks in darkness even in temperate conditions, and definitely not solo.
Hopefully she’s got what it takes to survive but those conditions don’t make me very optimistic.

WMUR said she started at 5am

It isn't looking good but there's always hope.
YouAreHardtoImagine t1_ix8zwod wrote
Can’t imagine what her parents are feeling right now. WMUR has them saying she “does not have much winter hiking experience” and mom dropped her off knowing this, but probably not the true conditions.

Are there any updates on this?
DeerFlyHater t1_ix81cs9 wrote
I've been looking all morning and unfortunately I have found nothing. It sounds like she is still missing.
I've checked scanner links on broadcastify and really haven't heard anything since yesterday. Not sure which net they are using for the search.
I'm in the flight path which aircraft would use between the search area and Concord and haven't heard any go over this morning.
Not looking good unfortunately.
Edit: just heard a blackhawk go over heading south to north.

The NH Fish and Game page shared the post (originally from the NH F&G Game Thief page) at around 8am today, so I’m guessing it’s still ongoing.
I’d suspect if we didn’t get any updates over the last 18 or so hours primarily in the dark there may be something soon with the daylight.

I think everyone here is thinking the exact same thing…that dropping ANYONE off for that hike equipped the way that they were is either a stunning act of ignorance or malice. If she comes off that mountain breathing it’s by the grace of god.

I agree wiht all who think there's something fishy about this. I'll say it: I'd be all over the mother about this. ALL over her. Who the f would drop their daughter off in those mtns @ 5am leaving her not properly dressed or supplied? Who??
I've climbed those mtns many times and they are treacherous even in good weather, nevermind these current temps and winds. I was up there Sunday afternoon and it was crazy windy and cold.
Currently (11.22.22) @ 1240, I can see a Civil Air Patrol helicopter flying along the Lafayette/Lincoln/Haystack ridge.
This is bugging the hell out of me...I hope she makes it. And/or that Mom had no wicked hand in this. Too many parents killing their kids these days :(
Please stay off our mtns unless you're experienced and properly equipped.

Dropped off by who?
Where is this person from?
squirrel_love t1_ix7u2ii wrote
Going out on a limb here, but likely someone she asked to drop her off at the trailhead so she could go for the hike.
FaustusC t1_ix7ud6m wrote
Yes, but what I was getting at: If you've lived here for any period of time, you should kinda know not to go hiking unprepared. Which extends to mentioning this to friends if they want to go hiking as well in your area.
So if someone dropped her off for a long hike they're equally responsible for her fate, if they're from the area.

No.

finalyst19 t1_ix8yanb wrote
Yeah that’s different from dropping someone off for a hike. She doesn’t need a wall tent and sled team to go on a hike in the white mountains. Plenty of people solo hike up there, very few of them have any issues.
FaustusC t1_ix8yimn wrote
Yeah, and the ones that don't are typically familiar and know to check the weather etc.
Unlike her.
And the last dude.
And the one before them.
Solo hiking is fine with a map, GPS and knowledge of the trails.
Wandering into the woods on your own in an unfamiliar place...welll...

This is NOT a good night to be out and exposed to the elements. Wind is blowing and it is already chilly.
Sounds like she might have been out alone too.
Scary for the family and friends for sure.
