They got what they wanted alright. As long as Trumpism remains a thing, they don't need to convince anyone on policy. So they're going to do everything they can to make sure that Trumpism doesn't die out, because if people had to vote on policy and governance rather than fear, the Democrats would have gotten slaughtered this cycle.

−7

They have to vote based on candidates, and 100% the democrats did everything they could to help the nutters on the right, the voters still selected them in the primaries. If the republicans stopped supporting the nutters, and the party itself actually did everything they could to distance themselves from Trump, it would die out and the democrats wouldn't be able to leverage it nearly as effectively.

You're exactly right that as long as Trumpism remains a thing democrats don't have to run on policy. They just have to run on "not affiliated with or endorsed by Trump" to win elections in the majority of the country.

It's a goddamn shame too, because when there's legitimate, spirited debate about whats best for the country, we all win. But when half the government is too busy shouting about how trump got robbed and the democrats want kids to be able to use litter boxes in schools, and the other half is spending more time pointing out the idiocy than they are governing, we're all being fucked.

Right now it would be suicide. The debates would be like chess with a pidgeon, and there's no way they come out looking good to the independents. Hard core right winger's would get the soundbites, despite having nothing of substance to say, by basically being outrageous. This will inflame their base "because they're just like us", and the independents would focus on the fact that the democrat isn't getting as many 'gotcha' points as the republican, despite the republican not focusing on any viable policy. When you have 2 people debating actual policy, then the people can make an informed decision.

The path we're on now will get herbert mountain dew camacho in the fucking presidency in a few years.

A lot of these degenerates wouldn't have made it out of the primaries if it weren't for that Democrat money pushing them there. But they're too convenient for Democrats (for the very reason that this post highlights) so they're going to keep trying to make Trumpism happen.

I'm sick of this gaslighting. The Democrats knew exactly what they were doing. And they knew that they could always shift the blame onto the "dumb republican voters". And they knew that their voters would eat it up and cheer it on, because LUL DUMB REPUBLICANS AMIRITE.

It's bullshit. It's legal, but it's bullshit. If you can't convince people to win on policy, then change your policy. Don't try to influence the elections so you can "win" purely by having a less shitty candidate.

−5

lMickNastyl OP t1_ivpvydv wrote

The democratic strategy to fund maga candidates is a lot like Murphy's military law:

If a plan is stupid but works it isn't stupid.

If you don't like the fact that these candidates appeal to the lowest common denominator then what are you doing supporting a party that allowed them to gain credit in the first place?

I'm not calling Republicans dumb at all but we all know that the radicalized conspiracy riddled goons lean hard right. Most Republicans in NH are socially liberal but fiscally conservative and don't buy into this bullshit. That's why sunnunu got 320,000+ votes but bolduc got 70,000 less meaning a lot of conservative voters voted for Hassan instead.

The Dems caught the GOP flat footed this time because the GOP wasn't able to counter the strategy because there were no radical Democrats running to fund.

The silver lining here for the GOP is that they are unlikely to humor jerkoffs like bolduc in 2024. Meaning that America may be turning a corner when it comes to hyper controversial candidates running for office.

The simple truth is that there would've been no strategy to use if the GOP ditched their harmful dead weight. Defeat is the greatest teacher and they are unlikely to repeat a mistake twice in a row.

4

Tullyswimmer t1_ivpwip8 wrote

> If you don't like the fact that these candidates appeal to the lowest common denominator then what are you doing supporting a party that allowed them to gain credit in the first place?

I'd like to ask the Democrats that question, along with, "If these candidates are such a danger to democracy, why did you elevate them?"

Reducing the election to "vote for us or democracy is in danger because we ensured that it would be if you didn't" really doesn't sit well with me. I mean, I know that 99.999% of Democrats have zero problem with that as long as their party maintains power, so it's the strategy I assume we'll see in almost every election going forward.

Nothing more democratic than making people vote for you out of fear.
