I was hiking wonalancet mtn yesterday with my dog and heard a sound that was like a giant lawn mower as it turns off in the distance. Lasted about 3 seconds. Didn't think anything of it then heard it again probably 10 minutes later, this time much closer. Trying to figure out what animal was giving us a warning, didn't see anything. Any ideas? I'm guessing moose but couldn't find anything online that sounded the same.

Grouse will make a "whup whup whup" by beating their wings that kind of trails off like you are describing.

It was definitely big foot. Was seen voting in Stark and is heading home with a little sticker on his chest. Ain’t America great!

if it sounded like a giant lawn mower then my guess is logging equipment. Certain things are allowed in areas of the WMNF including collection of firewood from dead, down trees. Logging companies get licenses. Workers have to clear fire roads, driveways for Rangers etc.

I hear you, but it definitely was an animal, I just don't have another way to describe it.

The sound you heard was quite likely a bobcat

The eastern cougar has been extinct for decades, people have convinced themselves they're still here because they've seen abnormally large bobcats.

Oh ok. I'm not sure because I'm having trouble knowing what kind of sound you mean. My guesses are -

a deer because they make weird noises sometimes

a person.

I feel like a bobcat sounds more like someone about to vomit... there's a gagging element to it (weird description, I know).

A moose sounds more like a growl through a tube and more like what you describe, OP. Maybe go on Youtube and watch different videos of the possible animals and see if something is familar?

I tried, to no avail. Lawnmower turning off is the closest I can come (like the last 2 seconds when there's some puttering over a low hum/growl). Whatever it was was definitely as big as if not bigger than a horse, but none of the moose sounds i can find are what i heard. Might just have to be a mystery (or sasquatch!).

Could be the Thaw Whales on Lake Wanolancet burrowing into the Mud for the winter.
