No idea. The guy at the office said it just happens and he sees plenty of people come in with that same letter saying the owe 20k+ and it’s almost always waived.

They did the same for my SSI benefits when I was not working at all (I had to quit my job because of sexual harassment), finally had an appt to submit my paperwork for the year and they actually wiped it all out. I would definitely go down to talk to them.
