I occasionally dumpster dive and just wanted people here to know that there were 2 or 3 new pellet stoves thrown in the Tractor Supply dumpster, one was still wrapped in the pallet

Not sure why they were thrown out so can't comment on their functionality

But stores are known to throw things away just because of minor damage or cosmetic damage

If I didn't live in a condo I would definitely grab them lol

If you are grabbing one and need help loading it send me a PM, I live nearby and my wife is working nights

I appreciate you. The fact that this is such a weird post, but you're offering to help, that's solid. Unfortunately, I would think rolling up to a retail store in a truck and loading stoves into the back, might get the cops called on you. Dumpster or not

Look it up once disposed of if it's not locked up its free grabs. That's why most all stores have a fenced in area because at that point its still stealing.

If it's not fenced, could they get you for "trespassing"?

On property open to the public like a business you can't be charged with trespassing unless you're asked/told to leave and don't

Otherwise a Walmart manager on a power trip could have anyone who walks into the store arrested anytime they want

Posted business hours seems like it could have an effect on that.

They could have been donated to people that needed them, especially with the price of heating right now, such a shame the store threw them out

They are probably damaged or have an active recall on them. While companies trash a lot of perfectly good things, with something that requires safety, I would not pull out of a dumpster.

Depending on what scrap prices are now, there is more than one use for them.

Tractor supply and stoves feels a lot like harbor freight and jack stands

Due to all the frivolous lawsuits, businesses aren’t allowed to donate these types of things. If they donate these and a house burns down, they’ll get sued. If they donate end of day food, and if someone gets sick, they’ll get sued etc.

^^^^ This. I was in a dunks at 5pm, shelves were empty, all donuts had just been tossed in trash cans. When I mentioned that there were homeless not far away, they said they used to donate, but someone got sick and sued... Sad.

Working retail we had to throw away alot of good products and the district manager would not allow us to donate anything (we were not even allowed to take stuff home) because of possible lawsuits. IE: Someone eats X thing and gets sick, sues the store for 'giving' them spoiled product. Will it hold up in court? I dunno.

Iv always heard of them but never seen proof of them, i'm sure if you dig you might find them.

If there is even a slight chance of damage, no company would ever donate them due to risk of causing a fire and then the company being held liable.

The Grand Teton stoves are having a quiet recall. Might not be worth the headache.

Amazing what gets thrown out. Out of curiosity - what's your best find?

I found a diesel heater once new in an open box, there was a tag that the customer returned it because it wouldn't ignite, threw an ignitor in and worked like a charm, over a year later and my dad is still using it in his shop

Also found a window unit AC, still in wrapped plastic, I believe it was returned and thrown out because it didn't come with the remote, again over a year and my dad is still using that in his shop, you just have to walk up to it to turn it on and off lol

Leave them there they are recalled for the electronics shorting out and catching fire.

I know a couple years ago epa regs changed and a lot of wood and pellet stoves had to go because stores could no longer legally sell them. A lot of them couldnt be returned to the manufacturer either. Not sure if this is the case but perfectly good things get thrown out all the time for legal reasons.

If there’s still one I’d absolutely die! Shoot me a message OP if you’re looking to jump on one early for a couple bucks.

I'm no legal expert but I believe that the courts have ruled trash is not protected property unless locked up

I don't do this much, mostly around the holidays when people return a ton of things, but I have never been questioned by the police

Pretty much this. If the dumpsters aren’t locked or behind a fence / gate then it’s fair game.

It depends.

In any case, if caught, you're likely to only get a talking to, not any civil or criminal action. Last time I went dumpster diving I just got a "hey, you can't be in there, get out".

graderscrapp t1_j1ounst wrote

It’s up to the property owner to set those rules. I guarantee you Tractor Supply would not allow people to trespass in their dumpsters, meaning it is illegal. If you had a dumpster in your yard, would it be legal for a random person you didn’t invite there to take stuff from it? Of course not
