Granite State Potato Chips

Sitting here (in FL, send help) watching football and eating some cape cod chips. It has me reminiscing about Granite State Potato chips. There was nothing like getting a fresh bucket-o-chips. I miss that place. That is all.

I can count at least three in my family and three in my wife’s family that pronounce it “bo-day-dough”.

My grandmother absolutely 100% pronounces the word "potatoes" with not a single phoneme right except the middle vowel.

/bɑːˈdeɪd.ɑːz/ instead of /pəˈteɪ.toʊs/

For me the best thing about granite state chips was the fact they weren't those awful wise chips we had in our circle of stores. 1000 time better.

I'm going to make garlic chips this afternoon. We picked up a big bag of garlic bulbs from Costco this week. Do those count as Granite State chips?

My grandparents would take me out to lunch, but stop at Granite State potato chips first and put the bucket of chips in the backseat, with ~10yo me. Pure torture. I became a pro at being as quiet as I could opening that bucket to steal a few.

Fun fact: the chips in the hopper weren’t “fresh out of the cooker”. They cooked once a week and stored them in 50 gal barrels. And would dump them in the hopper behind that wall.

Hah no. Unfortunately the owner, Buddy Kroft of Salem passed away a few years ago. Recipe died with him. It was just peanut oil and salt tbh.

I remember in the early 90’s a family from Colorado took over ownership. I think it only lasted a couple more years after that.

Great chips but I think they had to shut the place down in salem due to a SERIOUS rat problem. When I was a kid I used to trick or treat in my grandpas neighborhood and his neighbor who worked for them would always give out bags as treats and they were my favorite.

Yup, loved their chips too but they had been in decline a while. My dad got a case of chips at the fire station he worked at. Every bag had ants. Sad they couldn’t keep things going.

Lived about 5 Mi away from that place. A bucket was a Non-Stop staple in my household for as long as it was there. Miss it so much.

SONUVABITCH! I was JUST telling my wife about these delicious beauties I used to enjoy as a child in the 80s! I couldn't remember the name of them until I came across this post.

Sure wish they were still around though.

Potato chip company. They had a storefront where you could scoop out your own freshly made chips out of a huge trough to fill a big cardboard box or even a (branded) bucket.

You've got me all misty. I grew up in Salem, and my parents used to bring us to get a bucket every Saturday to keep at home. We each got a pretzel rod when we went (they were like 5 cents from a glass jar on the counter). Damn, I had a great childhood (and awesome parents) :)

Thanks for the memories. We went there every weekend, on our way to the lake! I took my kids a couple of times, when they were little (like 20 years ago), and they were amazed at chilps coming down the flute into a pile! I miss Benson's, too ☺
