Any tips on finding a rental in the New Haven area

Hi All!

My family is moving to the New Haven area at the end of June, and I have some questions about finding a good rental that I'm hoping ya'll can help answer. First, does anyone happen to know or have worked with a good realtor that is comfortable helping us remotely. I'm not sure we will have time for a visit before we actually move. Also, does anyone have a sense of how far in advance of our move we should be looking for a rental. I don't have a sense of how hard it is to secure something. For context, I'm hoping to live in the Wooster Square area (or somewhere else equally close to Yale).

Start looking early. There are rentals all the time, but a big chunk of them are summer turnover due to school calendar. We have one of the lowest vacancy rates in the country so it can get competitive. If you’re looking for an apartment building vibe it’s a little easier, but if you want a house or a unit in a two family or whatever having help will be huge.

Try talking to Dallas Davis or Mie-Sara Lai for a realtor.

Two thumbs up for Seabury Hill Realtors, I’ve worked with Jenn D’Amato, but I know others have had good experiences with the other members of that team. The landlord pays the fee, so there’s no extra cost for you.

Wooster square is pretty, but I would recommend East Rock over it. More of a community and still very close to the university.

I love Melanie Gunn at Seabury hill. They are based in Wooster Square and she found my rental and now we are working with her buying our first house.

Second Melanie. We moved from OK to CT 5 years ago and didn’t have time to come for a visit here so we did a couple apartment walk throughs virtually with her. In New Haven, you don’t pay the realtor fee, the landlord does so it’s technically a free service for you. Wooster square is where it’s at!
