Hi all,

I am in the process of growing my hair out but it’s gotten to a point where it needs to be shaped a little. My question: are there any salons you would recommend to shape it. I have a barbershop that I go to but they are more suited for fades or shorter cuts not someone with a little longer hair. Any recommendations would be much appreciated. TIA

I have been very satisfied with Skull & Combs. While I'm a shorter haircut guy, they've done an excellent job cutting my hair so that the shape lasts and dealing with the thinning top and one-sided widows peak.

I’ve seen them but I’ve heard they are stupid expensive for a cut and that it’s more for the social environment.

I've had my hair cut there before and got to be a captive audience for the owner sharing his opinions about the Las Vegas mass shooting, so personally the social environment isn't one I'd pay for.

The stylists are nice, but I liked Hive better.

I remember when they closed during the pandemic they rallied outside with “make hair cutting great again” signs. I’ve also heard some other things about the owner, that I can’t recall. So I believe he’s not liked, but everyone else at the shop is fantastic.

Edit: it is really expensive there though, but I’ve trusted them with my thinning hair the most.

I also quit going there during the pandemic even though I loved my stylist. The owner and others were making fun of a guy’s eyebrows being “out of control” right after he left one time I was there, and it turned me off even more. The prices also changed many times, and I wasn’t sure what they even meant at one point with weird names. I switched to the Hive and have been very happy with them.

Oh good lord, what did he have to say about the Las Vegas shooting? I loved S&C before their pandemic nonsense. After that, I switched to The Hive and I've been pleased with them.

The main thing I remember was that because the perpetrator hit people in the head from >1000 feet he must have been a highly trained sniper, probably military. As if you could fire over 1000 shots into a crowd at any distance and not hit people in the head.

I didn't get into an argument about it because I was halfway through a haircut and didn't want to have to get up an leave halfway through, but it was a pretty stupid take and I think he was doing mental gymnastics to steer the conversation toward anything other than "how's it working out to let every nutjob buy 20+ rifles?"

You know the deal, it's too soon, stop trying to take advantage of a tragedy to try and do anything about our gun problem, meanwhile it'll always be too soon to talk about mass shootings because there will always have been one last month.

Edit to add: the standing around with a shotgun about COVID shutdowns didn't surprise me too much. Bummer though because it was a convenient location for where I was living at the time.

Edit 2: on second thought I think the shotgun posing was an Instagram post, separate from the protest that other people have mentioned

I think for a men's cut they're in line with most places unless you're going to a Sports Cuts type of place. It looks like S&C and Hive will probably charge you about the same. Personally I like Skull and Combs, it's usually quick, they've offered me coffee while I waited and there's a dog.

Phil's on Audubon St. Divy, or anyone there really, can hook you up.

The Barberie. Geo is excellent, has done a great job shaping my hair when it’s really overgrown. He used to work at Skull and Combs, I followed him to his new place. But the owner does both barber and longer cuts so she’s a good option too. Very chill atmosphere.

I’ve also had good luck with Octavious at Pro-Style. More of a fade / simple cut place, but he also shaped my overgrown hair well. Very experienced barber.
