I read that living in West Haven isn’t safe. Is that true? Or are there sections of West Haven that you would not recommend living there?

curbthemeplays t1_ir7za2e wrote

Yeah, that’s not true. The last recorded FBI crime rate was 159.7, national average is 270.6.

There are some dumpier neighborhoods but I assume you’ll be going to check things out and can feel it out.

Yeah, I'll definitely make time to go and check out some neighborhoods. Thanks!

People say it's unsafe because there is a high minority population. It's generally fine. I love West Haven.

Grew up in West Haven. Can confirm when I was a teenager I started hearing that "West Haven has gone downhill" which was code for "more Black people live here now." Absolutely nothing to back it up.

The worst part about West Haven is that leadership does absolute nothing to develop it. And, ironically, the longest standing businesses I've seen are POC-owned. Just drive down Campbell Ave and you'll see dozens of salons, grocery markets, restaurants, etc owned by Black, Latino, and Asian people that have been there for years. Then you have Joe Shmo White Guy I went to high school with who opens up a new bar or Herbalife "nutrition club" that lasts for 5 minutes before going out of business.

I know NEBCO isn't POC-owned but just look at how Jimmies is trying to strong arm them from opening up. The town is full of good ol boys who are so averse to business development by "outsiders" for fear of losing their piece of the pie...all at the expense of the residents. For my whole damn life we've had 3 miles of beach with 3 restaurants: Captain's Galley, Chick's, and Jimmies. Two of them are gone and the last one sucks. The people deserve better.

West Haven is a great little town. It sucks because city leadership is a corrupt pile of incompetent idiots and has been for decades, not because Black people live there. More POC doesn't mean the town is "going downhill." If anything, they're the only ones keeping it alive.

There isn't a ton to do but if you're a college student living near UNH you'll have plenty of options 10 minutes away in New Haven. Unsafe it certainly is not.

Rant over lol

Jimmie’s is insane. They’re a failing restaurant that’s trying to block a COMPLIMENTARY business that will bring hundreds of thousands of people to their vicinity. Idiots. No wonder they’ve squandered that great location.

They've been in that amazing location since the 70s and just added outdoor seating in what like the 2000s? They've been a joke for as long as I can remember. Basically just a historical landmark in my eyes

West haven is definitely safe compared to pretty much anywhere in new haven

West Haven is safe, but so is almost all of New Haven. I don't know why people get the impression that these places aren't safe, unless it's people from the whiter parts of CT assuming that the cities aren't safe.

I've lived all over New Haven. Maybe we have a different definition of safe. As a general rule none of those people are out to hurt you. Most of them won't bother you at all if you don't bother them. Keep your head about you and treat everyone you come across as a human being and you'll generally be fine.

Also, there's enough areas of New Haven that don't have any of what you mentioned.

I’m pretty sure what op is asking for in other words is to not live in the hood which most places in new haven qualify as

curbthemeplays t1_irb8ypb wrote

You just named 2 of the highest crime areas of the city 🙄

Economy-Value-7032 t1_irbt83e wrote

Don’t forget the ville and the trey(dk how to spell it) . I’m not just naming places they are the most prevalent areas in the city all which have high crime rates

2

curbthemeplays t1_irbv2zc wrote

Most prevalent? What does that even mean? New Haven has just as many good areas as bad.

Economy-Value-7032 t1_irc0gy6 wrote

Also I don’t say any of this town down talk new haven I actually love the city personally I’m just aware it’s not a generally safe area and it isn’t somewhere I plan on raising my kid

2

Economy-Value-7032 t1_irc09ut wrote

That’s definitely not the case

Let’s see.

Good: downtown, East Rock, Wooster Square, East Shore, Morris Cove, Prospect Hill, Westville

OK/Marginal: Edgewood, Dwight, Amity, Q Meadows, Beaver Hills

Bad: Fair Haven, The Hill, Newhallville, Dixwell

It evens out, and most population are in OK areas.

Dude, if downtown is safe enough for sheltered Yale freshmen, it's safe. Most of downtown is bougie as fuck.

Yale students have an entire area of the city to themselves yales campus is huge

I worked in New Haven for 3 years and have lived in the area for 12 years. I’m plenty familiar with downtown and am there multiple times a week. I, nor anyone I know, has ever had an issue there. Sure things happen, but consider that hundreds of thousands of people pass through downtown every year and it’s no more dangerous than any major city.

Economy-Value-7032 t1_irc6u45 wrote

Calling downtown a good area says enough about your standards. I worked in down town and literally saw an overdose every single shift I worked except for snow days . Living in downtown would be comparable to living in any hood area like any new haven native would tell you .

JWilsonArt t1_ireff06 wrote

If downtown isn't safe I'd love to hear your impression of where it IS safe? Someplace where crime is somehow impossible? Down town is as safe as any place, once you leave your house.

1

Economy-Value-7032 t1_irefoad wrote

I would call milford safe , west haven relatively safe , amity relatively safe , the Yale section of downtown safe. Just because nothing happened to you there doesn’t make it safe by comparison to other places

Yeah, every single one of my New Haven friends (about a dozen) has had their car broken into at one point.
