I've lived all over New Haven. Maybe we have a different definition of safe. As a general rule none of those people are out to hurt you. Most of them won't bother you at all if you don't bother them. Keep your head about you and treat everyone you come across as a human being and you'll generally be fine.

Also, there's enough areas of New Haven that don't have any of what you mentioned.

I’m pretty sure what op is asking for in other words is to not live in the hood which most places in new haven qualify as

You just named 2 of the highest crime areas of the city 🙄

Don’t forget the ville and the trey(dk how to spell it) . I’m not just naming places they are the most prevalent areas in the city all which have high crime rates

Most prevalent? What does that even mean? New Haven has just as many good areas as bad.

Let’s see.

Good: downtown, East Rock, Wooster Square, East Shore, Morris Cove, Prospect Hill, Westville

OK/Marginal: Edgewood, Dwight, Amity, Q Meadows, Beaver Hills

Bad: Fair Haven, The Hill, Newhallville, Dixwell

It evens out, and most population are in OK areas.

Dude, if downtown is safe enough for sheltered Yale freshmen, it's safe. Most of downtown is bougie as fuck.

I worked in New Haven for 3 years and have lived in the area for 12 years. I’m plenty familiar with downtown and am there multiple times a week. I, nor anyone I know, has ever had an issue there. Sure things happen, but consider that hundreds of thousands of people pass through downtown every year and it’s no more dangerous than any major city.

Calling downtown a good area says enough about your standards. I worked in down town and literally saw an overdose every single shift I worked except for snow days . Living in downtown would be comparable to living in any hood area like any new haven native would tell you .

If downtown isn't safe I'd love to hear your impression of where it IS safe? Someplace where crime is somehow impossible? Down town is as safe as any place, once you leave your house.

I would call milford safe , west haven relatively safe , amity relatively safe , the Yale section of downtown safe. Just because nothing happened to you there doesn’t make it safe by comparison to other places
