When I googled Grey Matter bookstore came up but it seems to be mostly nonfiction there. Any similar bookstore that sells used/cheap books nearby?

Book Trader screwed me over - I dropped off a several boxes of fairly recent literature type fiction (my wife had just finished her MFA) that they assured me they would go through and get back to me when they weren't so busy. They blew us off for the first few phone calls (spread out over about 6 weeks), and when I remembered three months later and called them they told me they had rejected and donated most of the books (without calling me as they assured me they would), but I had $20 of store credit for a couple of the books they stole. I never went in to collect it, but if you go there and tell the manager/buyer that they are an ass you are welcome to it with my blessing.

Had a similar experience myself earlier this year, FYI. Wish I had had read something like your comment before I dropped off all my boxes and known to try another route if I wanted to recoup any of the value of what I offloaded, so good on you for posting this here.

i consider myself a used book store connoisseur and grey matter has, by far, the best used fiction section in the greater new haven area. book trader certainly has more books, but it's so picked over that the volume actually becomes an impediment to finding quality stuff.
one place that i haven't seen mentioned here is new haven reads! it's a free book store on ashmun st. they have weird hours because it's mostly a non-profit/afterschool program, but lots of yale people donate their collections there so you can find some incredible stuff.

I used to love that place, but now that Pattis owns it, I can't patronize it anymore.

Grey Matter has a variety. Book Trader is cool too. Neverending Books. For a used book field trip, go to Book Barn in Niantic.

Book barn in Niantic. Lots of books, all categories and the drive isn't bad if there's light traffic. 95N to exit 73 turn left off of the highway you'll see it on the left side about 1.5 miles off the exit. Enjoy.

Not nearby but reread books is awesome. Up in Cheshire and it's all donations so books are usually 3-5 bucks

Keep an eye out for library sales in nearby towns. Branford public library has a great one every September. Some libraries also have small “bookstores”. This website is difficult to use but has listings of upcoming and ongoing sales:

Not sure of any used there, but if a book lover then make sure you know about the new Possible Futures bookstore on Edgewood Ave, walkable/near downtown.

neverending books in east rock is a free bookshop. all donation based. hours are a little spotty because it’s volunteer/collectively run, but it’s almost always open after about 5:30 on weekdays.
