It's very difficult to find a good 1BR apt for that price range in downtown....east rock might be cheaper. Good areas to live are downtown (close to bars, restaurants), east rock (peaceful, clean), science hill, Wooster square(if you have a car)

I think anything around Edgewood Park in New Haven is best right now. East Rock and Wooster Square have gotten super pricey. Lots of brand new apartment buildings in addition to the nice, old apartments. The part of Wooster Square I lived in had way more petty crime and the rent was much higher. Car rifled through if unlocked, packages stolen, and anything outside that wasn’t nailed down vanished.
Edgewood area is a decent trade off; you’re on the grittier side of downtown, away from trendy restaurants and grocery stores, but it’s still really close to downtown and much more affordable. You can get everything you need somewhere on Whalley Avenue, though it is one of the worst streets in the city. There’s a new cycle track on Edgewood Ave that is handy for cyclists. There is some petty crime, varies from block to block, but it’s a population more reflective of the city, so you don’t feel like you’re in a bubble. I prefer that, but some folks might just say it’s louder and less safe. And my pumpkin hasn’t been stolen (yet..).

You absolutely dont need a car living in wooster square lol its 5mins walk from downtown. The entire neighborhood is like 3/4mi by 1/2mi

*edit: you dont need one just to get to the shops and restuarants and bars downton. New Haven is very compact and easily the most walkable city in CT despite the insane traffic

I have family who live on mix avenue and I have personally looked at apartments on mix avenue and felt fine. I haven’t heard about to much that happens over there.

There is a large apartment complex on Mix that has ongoing hot water and heat issues, not sure which one. Honestly I would go downtown or No Haven over Mix, too many stolen cars and shopping on Dixwell is problematical with ongoing purse grabbings, car jackings etc
