Not having a car is going to restrict your options outside of New Haven severely, unfortunately. I am not familiar enough with the public transit system to help you on where you could look outside of New Haven.

As far as websites - I would avoid Craigslist entirely. Zillow, Trulia, and apartments.com might be worth checking out, too. If you're looking for roommates, though, the Yale off-campus Facebook group will probably be your best option. You (likely) won't find people looking for roommates on Zillow or Trulia.

There is a bus that goes into new haven from Hamden via Whitney ave. Hamden is incredibly safe along Whitney. Less so along Dixwell ave. If you can find an apartment in hamden within walking distance to Whitney ave I'd say it's a slam dunk. My mother walked this route for 30 years to her library position at yale.

Hellll no, I almost died in Hamden, ON WHITNEY AVE. 3 cars pulled up trying to rob me of my motorcycle and almost shot me. This was on the light at the eli Whitney museum. They chased me down all the way to New Haven. Needless to say, I moved out and got an apartment in Woodbridge. I'm good lol. Hamden is getting worse and worse as time passes. Even my mother's car got stolen out of her garage in Hamden. Both things happened in 2022

So I grew up on public transport. I was raised in New Haven most of my life but did live in East Haven and West Haven too. A bike goes a long way and if the weather isn’t too good, grabs your bike and put it on the bus. You just gotta learn the schedule and work around it.
