TBH I haven’t had a bad slice in town! However, my main go-to is One Six Three in East Rock, as they are a bit cheaper ($10 for a personal) and have some out-of-the-box flavors to try

  1. Sally’s

  2. Zuppardi’s

  3. Frank Pepe in person

  4. Modern

  5. Frank Pepe takeout

I like Zeneli, but it reminds me of a Dallas-based chain that makes Neapolitan-style pizzas, Cane Rosso. While they're quite good, I wouldn't consider either Cane Rosso or Zeneli to be better than the main New Haven places

Cheesesteak land huh. I was raised down that way too. If modern is local to you and you have a car You might try venturing just north to hamden. Elis Markert on whitney and jroos make a familiar pizza to me. both are probably about 10-12 mins from east rock or science hill area. Modern, and 163 got a lot of my pizza money when I lived in new haven.

I got recommended the pizza at BAR a lot. Didn’t try it yet though.

Why is next door controversial? They make solid pizza.

If anything, pepe’s and sally’s have gone down since they went corporate. And this is me speaking as a crotchety old guy that used to wait outside in the snow for a pie.

Atticus Market in East rock is totally different but really excellent. Their crust is somehow extremely light but also substantial and satisfying. They also have really great specials

Last time I went to Pepe’s in person it tasted like elio’s pizza, maybe worse

Try zuppardis in west haven. I always get the chicken and bacon pizza and it’s amazing.

Hard to say. Modern is up there. Zuppardi’s, Mike’s, Next Door, Nolo/Da Legna, Sally’s, Atticus Market, Zeneli are my other tops. Pepe’s when it’s good, but so inconsistent lately. There are other great spots a little further like Roseland, Jimmy’s, Strega, Papa’s, Bufalina. We are majorly spoiled.

Sally’s is my favorite by a mile. Modern comes in second. Really like Ernie’s over in westville/amity. It’s out of the way but worth it. Dayton St. can be hit or miss but is overall very solid and right down the street from Ernie’s. Pizza House is also very good but not New Haven style apizza, it’s more your standard Greek style but like I said it’s very good!

My personal ranking is something like as follows, but it depends a little on whenever the last pizza I had was, since some of these places that are farther down the list can be a bit inconsistent. Also, getting the pizza in person or eating it on the sidewalk right after you take it out (assuming you pick it up right when it's taken out of the oven of course) is always better, especially with the thin crust places, since when the pizza sits in a box for more than a couple of minutes it loses some of its texture.

Sally's

Modern

One Six Three

Ernie's

Pepe's

Zuppardi's

Da Legna

Zeneli

Next Door

BAR

There are lots of other good places (Roseland, Dayton Street were mentioned among others) but don't quite rise to the top tier list from what I can tell.

There's also a pizza truck that's good that people hire for parties and such, but I forget the name of it.

That’s totally fair—I could see how they’re a bit less traditional than Modern, Pepe et al. which might not be everyone’s taste. Admittedly, putting blueberries on the BBQ pizza is a little questionable…

I’m not opposed to that. I like Nolo a lot which is creative with toppings, and other places like that. I just didn’t think the crust/ingredients were great. I got a more traditional pizza there and just didn’t love it.

I'm new to the area, so I don't have any idea on trends, but Modern has never been better than the top three on my list. It seems strange to me given how many people have it as their top choice

I've lived here forever, but haven't been doing New Haven pizza. I got into a pizza rut in the burbs. Last week I started a personal pizza reboot tour and will try a different one every week!

Grand Apizza was my neighborhood go-to a long time ago. The question by Putrid-Acadia-2490 and the answers are going to be helpful. TY

When we moved to New Haven in 2002 we had a party and I picked up *unsliced* pies from Bar, Modern and Pepes.

We then ripped the lids off the boxes and mixed them up so no one could tell which pie was which, and did a blind taste test.

Obviously it all depends on the tastes of the individuals at the party, but it came out:

  1. Modern
  2. Bar
  3. Pepes

I'm also still partial to Zuppardis, am still mourning Spooners, and Yorkside is our goto when we're in the mood for Greek pie. Also, Bar often wins out because they have the best salad and I love the mashed potato pie.

You really can’t go wrong with anything from the new haven staples to mom and pop places. But modern is my personal goat
