You will be absolutely fine. There is plenty of foot traffic in that area at all times of day and night. You are just about across the street from the Yale Security offices. There are plenty of good restaurants within a block or two and the rest of downtown and Yale is just beyond that. Stop & Shop is only a short walk, though I might only do that in the daytime as the Elm St side can get a little squirrely at night.

Use common sense and take the same precautions you would in any city and you'll be fine.

In general though, New Haven is a great little city that punches way above it's weight in terms of culture, restaurants, bars, clubs, arts, music, etc.

Edit: I live a couple of blocks away from there and have never had any problems.

I haven’t lived there, but I was around the corner on Chapel and Howe.

My girlfriend walked from Yale drama buildings to my place without issue, often late at night. I rarely left at night but generally felt safe in that area.

I used to live around there. No issues other than people going into my car if i was stupid enough to leave it unlocked.

I live near Chapel on Dwight St, and IMO the area is plenty safe. Never had an issue.

Safe but it is a city— take precautions, don’t let your guard too down

Okay so the one thing you need to be fully prepared for is that - you will be very very close to the emergency room, like we're talking 3 or 4 blocks and so you will hear sirens blaring at every hour of the day if your windows are open

A friend lived in that building for a few years. She felt safe, no issues. I agree that it’s a safe area with great walkability.

You won't need to walk back from downtown because you will be downtown.

That area is fine these days. Yeah, you'll see more black people than East Rock or Wooster Square, but you'll be fine. How bad can a spot be that's a few blocks from an Apple Store?
