Hey y’all! I’m going home to MS next weekend for our family Christmas. Instead of getting everyone gifts we always play Dirty Santa except we compete to see who can get the best gifts for the game for around $20-40.

Is there anything that is distinctly New Haven or CT that y’all can think of that will help elevate me to the status of Amazing Game Gift Picker? Could be anything from cookies/cake to pretties to sit around the house. I just need my teenager and to be able to take it on the plane.

Thanks!

very good stuff for sure, not very distinctly "new haven" in any way, though.

really? been in there a ton (I work nearby) & never saw any of that. good to know.

wish lipgloss crisis was still around, or at least that someone would sell their old collapsed coliseum graphic shirt. that was some real new haven shit

Lipgloss is still very much around. Sara does stuff at least monthly at Three Sheets and has various other events/markets she’s at selling stuff. Pretty sure she doesn’t make those shirts anymore though.

oh i know, i know sara. she did a great & pretty lucrative show at neverending books not long ago. i just wish she'd put this shirt back out, hahah.

Just wanna jump into this thread as the owner(s)—Westville General is where I’m pushing more hyper local stuff like NHV hats, keychains, notepads, etc.

Strange Ways has local artists, but not necessarily things that say CT/New Haven. These deadstock Connecticut patches are cool tho! https://www.strange-ways.com/products/vintage-connecticut-patch

PS-Always appreciate the store reccs during gift giving season. 🙏🎁

Gather a bunch of shells from the beach at Long wharf at low tide and put them in a sealed mason jar. That smell is distinctly New Haven.

Modern and Zuppardi’s will shrink wrap pies. Heat them up on a hot cast iron skillet and it’s almost as good as at the restaurant.

Maple syrup from a connecticut location. Maybe buy something at a farmers market from a local farmer? A bic razor! A pez toy if you can find one. A subway sandwich (they are based in Milford). A Stanley tool product? (Based in new Britain)

Edit - go to guilford and get something from bishops orchards - they make a lot of baked goods they make and sell on site. At least guilford is still in New Haven county!

Came here to say this! When I lived in OH my parents would always bring me Hummel’s with New England split top hotdog ROLLS. We call them ROLLS here in New England!! If you can buy some lobsters there, steam them up, and slap them on the rolls with butter!

Apparently if you eat 2 tablespoons of nutmeg you trip your face off. Prolly just from the horrible flavor of choking down two whole tablespoons of nutmeg in the first place.

I'm also a MS transplant. When I go home I always get asked to bring Maple Syrup/Honey or Yuengling's since those things are hard to come by down there. My family also loves to collect antiques which is great to look for up here considering it's the oldest part of the country. Depending on their taste you may be able to find a really cool piece for them somewhere.

There’s a section with a bunch of new haven themed stuff (hats, shirts, etc) in campus customs on Broadway.

I normally don't push my products on Reddit, but this seems helpful. I make New Haven-themed 3D printed gifts. I made some NHRR nightlights, but I can do any photo of any New Haven site you want (unless copyright restricted). I also make, guitar picks and ornaments and I'm looking to expand my product base if you have any ideas. Shoot me a message if you're interested for find ElmCityArtMaker on Etsy.

Edit: I'll also be showing at the MakeHaven booth at the Holiday Village on the green this weekend (Thurs-Sat)

Honestly, frozen Zuppardi's pies would be hilarious for a secret Santa. Might be a logistical nightmare keeping them frozen while traveling, but if you can make it work...
