Friend and I have a tradition of seeking out the place where we can get the best, most food for lunch (the kind of lunch that inspires a long nap afterwards). I just moved to town and he's coming to visit soon - tell me where I should bring him!
Tandoor. Price for the lunch buffet went up pretty significantly earlier this year, unfortunately. Something like $17 or $18 now. (Used to be $4-5 cheaper.) Still delicious, though.
Still for 20 bucks you literally can just eat until you explode
The food carts near Yale New Haven Hospital on Cedar Street.
Are there still food carts at Ingalls hockey rink on Sachem Street?
The Mexican food trucks at Long Wharf.
Sushi Palace on Dixwell in Hamden. All you can eat, but really good quality.
The carts are still at Ingalls rink, though fewer when it gets cold and rainy.
Not cheap but John Davenports has an incredible brunch buffet on Sundays with omelette station and a huge variety of stuff, plus great views of the city.

It was $24 per person last time I went -- not sure if they've raised it with recent inflation.

Zoi’s has always been good for the money. And P&M, Nica’s. Atticus Market isn’t super cheap but the food is pretty amazing.
Sitar has good lunch specials.
Olmo is filling for a bagel sandwich.
Haven Hot Chicken sandwiches aren’t cheap, but they’re massive. Same thing with Munchies.
Biagetti’s in West Haven is not the cheapest Italian, but a pretty amazing old school joint whose portions will feed you for days.
Bella’s is another that is not afraid of massive portions
Edit: not open for lunch, but Next Door often has some good deals.
Echoing the food carts by the Med School/Hospital. I am a School of Public Health student who spends way too much time in that area and the carts are the best part of my day.

Thanks for a list of things this person wasn't asking. What time is it...well it isn't raining.
How is it not relevant? They asked for large lunch portions for the money. That’s what I provided.
Eh, none of those places are "cheap" lunch, tho. Olmos is like $8 for a basic breakfast sandwich. And Bellas? Cheap? Atticus Market is not only not "super cheap" they're expensive...and the portions are not large.
ITT, everyone listing places that aren't offering cheap lunch specials, but they like them so they'll list them.
Ninth Square Market Caribbean is insane value. The $15 large plate can easily be split as two healthy portions, and you're getting a smorgasbord of delicious food.
Also can't really go wrong with just getting pizza. $20 for a large cheese at Modern or $13 for a large cheese at 163 is value town for the amount and quality you get.
Did you just mention really good quality and sushi palace together? Or have you never had quality sushi…
It is good quality for the price; I’m not expecting Nobu.
