Looking for a good therapist or psychiatrist in the area. There seem to be a lot online but then have mixed reviews on how they actually are professionally. Anyone have any good ones or practices they recommend in the general area?

Who ever you choose, avoid BetterHelp. I've heard terrible things about the platform from friends.

I've heard great things about finding a therapist on open path collective & psych today. Best of luck!

Funny I’ve had a great experience with them. You can change your therapist as often as you like until you find a good match. And their customer support has been great.

There are so many viral videos on tiktok about how horrible they've been for people, including therapists. I'm glad you had a good experience though, hopefully OP finds a good fit

I’ve also heard terrible things about them. Might keep them as a last resort though. Thank you both!

Use Psychology Today. You can filter based on a number of criteria, including presenting issues, gender of therapist, insurances accepted, etc. If they have a website, there will be a link to it. You can see pictures of their offices, see their credentials, and learn more than you will off your insurance directory. Call a few and speak with them. In 10-15 minutes on the phone, you'll get a sense of who seems like a better fit than others.

Good luck. There has been mile long waiting lists for people who treat teens.

I see a single therapist (not apart of a practice) who specializes is EMDR for PTSD/childhood abuse survivors specifically.

I see an APRN for medication management at Generations Psychiatry. They're in Branford, but I do telehealth. I've met 2 different APRNs both were amazing. I only switched due to insurance issues. I've seen a lot of psychiatrists and this is the first one I feel like doesn't push pills.

For example I take a medication for nightmares. I also work with my therapist on coping skills. Last time I told the APRN the nightmares had started coming back but I wanted to wait it out before upping my dose again. She totally agreed, keep working with my therapist, and we can always go up if needed.

This is very different from other psychiatrists who push adding on multiple medicatoons and are always increasing dosages. I feel much more respected.

I think they also have a therapist on staff!

I like Well Life Therapy and know quite a few people who go there as well. Their office is in Middletown, but I think most of their providers offer virtual sessions. They responded very quickly to my initial request which was such a relief.

Willow Treatment in Hamden has some of the best therapists around. A major help to me and multiple people close to me.
