hi! does anyone have recommendations on a where to get coffee beans/coffee grounds in the area (i generally prefer dark roast but in the past i've tried some medium roast that has pleasantly surprised me)? i'm new to new haven (came from Asia) and just wanted to try out local roasters or just anything aside from the typical commercially available coffee grounds.
This is the correct answer.
Willoughby's is the goat. If you are like me and hate downtown due to parking concerns, they have a location in branford with lots of parking.
Branford is also the main location where they do the roasting. Super fresh beans!
You can also buy them at Best Video in Hamden.
I will forever and always recommend Willoughbys.
I’m a big fan of Giv. They’re in Canton CT but they will ship for free for the right sized order.
Perkatory is in Branford and a good one if you want to drive somewhere.
I haven’t tried Willoughby’s but it’s on the list.
One World coffee roasters in East Haven! Hands down the best coffee beans I’ve ever had. They do free local delivery of their beans to New Haven county too.
I second this! Their delivery was the highlight of lockdown. They also have gift boxes.
Perkatory is my favorite in the area.
If you’re interested in high-end coffee, Giv is good as a few others have mentioned. I’m not sure if it’s still the case, but their beans at least used to be available to buy from the Jitter Bus and Pistachio. Fussy and the Coffee Pedaler often have some nice high end beans for sale. Atticus Market sells Ilse, which is very expensive but very good. I’ve also occasionally seen a few other high end roasters at Atticus.
If you’re willing to drive a bit out of New Haven, Neat in Darien has excellent beans and is a very nice cafe, Roanjena in Glastonbury has Giv and often Ilse and is all-around an excellent place with great coffee and awesome baked goods, and Source Coffeehouse in Bridgeport has Passenger (PA based) and a rotating guest roaster, sometimes a local roaster.
I personally think Willoughby’s is dreadful, but if you’re into dark/medium roasts, they’ll probably have more of that then the other places I mentioned.

I’ve have consistently gotten good beans at East Rock Coffee, Fussy Coffee and the Jitter Bus. I’m not sure where they get their beans from all the time though. I think East Rock roasts their own, Fussy usually has Kuma coffee available, and I’m not sure about the Jitter Bus.
Second the beans from ERC. They roast at their bigger location on Whitney (Poppy’s) and have some really good stuff
Giv is great. Willoughby's too, but Giv has a wider range. You can mail order from them.
Story and Soil in Hartford, and sometimes Fussy in New Haven, have some really nice boutique selections. Like, amazing small production lot stuff you won't find elsewhere.
If you're in the Wooster Square area, there's a spot on Grand Ave called New Line Blending and Roastery that has fresh whole roasted beans as well as a variety of teas and herbal blends. www.newlineblending.com
As others said, Willoughbys is my fave, classic 3rd wave coffee shop. Common Grounds is also pretty good and my #2 favorite, kinda between 3rd & 4th wave coffees as a vibe (if that distinction matters at all to you).
Willoughbys has 2 cafes in Downtown New Haven, but a couple other spots too. You can buy their beans at any cafe (they roast at their home in Branford).
Common Grounds is opening soon on York St in NH, but has cafes in Hamden, Shelton, or Branford. They have roasters in every cafe, the owner makes rounds to do batches in each location
If you like to taste interesting and new beans based on their natural characteristics from where they're grown, how it's roasted, Willoughbys is your go-to.
If you wanted quality coffee but also the option of flavored coffees (even in whole bean), Common Grounds is great, but they still have quality unfavored traditional blends too that are delicious. I personally prefer their house blend to Willoughbys, but prefer Willoughbys espresso and single origin coffees over Common Grounds.

haha you got me spot on right there. also works for me since I just discovered Willoughby's is a very short walk from where I live. Thank you for the welcome and your other coffee suggestions! (btw I also bought the Willoughby's espresso and it's great! i love it)

Coffee Pedaler 100%. They specialize in mostly light roast coffees, but will have a few medium roasts as well. Usually have Tandem in stock and if you're lucky, La Cabra. The La Cabra is outrageously good.
The Jitter Bus, parked at Elm and Hillhouse 10 am - ...? Coincidentally, it's right up the street from Willoughby's at Church/Whitney/Elm. Both solid options.
Also second the Jitter Bus—always get coffee beans from them as gifts for the holidays

You guys are the best!!! I found my way to Willoughby’s in Church St (just a 5min walk from where I live!) and at first I thought I went to the wrong place ‘cause I only saw the pastries on display and when I turned left there’s a whole freakin wall of coffee beans of all sorts!! 😍😍😍 I think they also have some single origins there so I’ll try that next time (do you have recommendations?). I bought the espresso house blend for now and will def come back and try other beans. I also took note of your other suggestions, unfortunately I don’t have a car, so I’ll note them down for the time when I get to find someone to drive with! Haha you guys gave a lot that's walking distance from me though, so I'll enjoy my time exploring them
