So the closest IMAX to NH is the Conneticut Post 14 in Milford - I'm fairly certain it will be showing Avatar in the high frame rate format as it uses a single laser projection. From my understanding the more "advanced" dual projection theaters aren't able to project in 48 fps. However I'd ask / read reviews about whether the HFR is worth it as I've seen on reddit some people saying it's pretty jarring when it switches between 48/24 FPS.

While not IMAX my fav theater is the North Haven cinemark - not too busy and huge comfy seats

That's interesting. I just saw it yesterday in North Haven, was unbelievable. But I definitely felt like while the majority of the movie was in a higher frame rate, I noticed bits and pieces that didn't seem to be. I wouldn't say it was jarring, just noticeable, and certainly not more than a few scenes for 5-10 seconds at max.

I think it was jarring, and the switching of fps was distracting when I saw it.

I would go with the 24fps if I had to pick one. Avatar is "epic" enough for motion blur to work well.

For context, I own Gemini Man, Billy Lynn's Halftime walk, and I saw saw Hobbit in HFR....

Where TrueCut Motion comes into play are like long panning shots of a landscape, where the pan speed doesn't sync with the camera's fps, and you get judder. I am all for fixing that in post.

I wonder if James Cameron is getting new people, like me, more interested in which theaters have upgraded their technology, and if so, which technology.

I may do this. I'll see it locally and, when I have to do a NYC run, I might drive, and take the train from there (I avoid driving into the city.) Would be interesting to compare the two versions.

Can't wait too long -- who knows how long movies stay in theaters now, and Avatar is getting the premier room in each of the multiplexes for now.

Depends on whether I can stand to see the plot a second time. I had no interest in seeing the first Avatar, including when it was re-released in Sept.

Will it be less terrible than the original?

I won't even say that the original's plot was bad -- I've read much about it. Seems imaginative SciFi. And, probably, to people who saw the first one without knowledge of what the plot was, the awesome sense of surprise will be missing from the second one.

I'm just personally burned out a bit from Cameron's flat plotlines -- though I enjoyed them at the time.

But, who knows, I might change my mind after seeing Avatar 2. Probably, in retrospect, I would have gone to a theater in Sept to see the re-release of Avatar 1. Will never get that chance again to see if remastered on a big screen.

Apparently there are lots of dangling plot lines in Avatar 2 which are cleared up in the later sequels that have already been written, and that's bound to be frustrating.

Milford is a Cinemark too and redid all the theaters aside from IMAX to have those seats

i don't know about the tech, but is my favorite local theater, only thing it's missing is snack delivery to your seat.
