I’ve always considered it a wash, especially in the weekends when there aren’t really express trains. Like the redditor below, you could also go to Fairfield metro and save like four bucks but the time is almost similar once you add driving time. I guess it’s a better option if you have more than one person going.

We park in Milford, it’s free and shaves off a little time from the ride. You can purchase them right on the platform before you get on

I always did Stamford for the express then drive the rest. If that trains local from Stamford to New haven and there's no traffic on 95 (big if) you'll be faster

In the past I went to Stamford and parked there as gave more options leaving the city. I know been redoing the garage so not sure on parking at the moment. Parking was about $10 or so if I recall correctly and can purchase tickets at the station in person or on the machine.

There are trains from stamford that have no stops 45min if not it's around 1.5 hrs....they have long term parking it was like 20 bucks for 2 nights when I did this a month ago. U can buy tickets on the train but I believe they're more expensive...there is a train station at stamford 2nd floor on the south side u can buy tickets at the booth ie from a machine

You could drive to stamford and park there. Then you would have the option of either express and local metro north trains to grand central. Make sure you pick the express. It seems clear you don’t want to park in new haven. Other options are milford, west haven and bridgeport.
If you are dead set on getting on the sub way - i’ve done it before in both queens and the bronx. Just pick an express subway stop and see of there are parking garages. In queens - i used to live in forest hills and i know the e and f lines are express at the 71 ave stop. There is a parking garage not to far from that subway stop. In the bronx - years ago i googled a stop on the subway that was express not to far north of i-95. Then i made sure there was a 24 hour parking garage in advance. It worked out - but i forgot where it was.
Yes you can buy tickets on the train from the conductor but its more expenisve. You can buy tickets at the kiosk machines in the stations or beside the tracks or at the ticket window.
If there is traffic on the road - the train save time. No traffic - the car is quicker.

The MTA is Metro North Railroad Long Island Railroad, Staten Island Rapid Transit, New York City Transit and Bridges and Tunnels. The MTA oversees the operations of all those agencies and provides funding for them.

New haven station has garage parking. If you want free parking, park at IKEA and uber to the station for a fiver. We usually park the garage though. Worth it to us.

Considering how many catalytic converters have been stolen from this parking lot in recent months, and the fact it is not a public parking lot, I would highly not recommend doing this.

It’s definitely not close to NYC but if you’re coming from New Haven, I would park at the West Haven train station and catch the train in. Realistically you don’t save that much time with traffic/driving on the I95. It’s free parking on the weekends. To buy tickets and look up train times just download the MTA train time app, super easy to use now. You can always still buy tickets from machines but the app makes it so easy now.
