Hello, I’m living out of my car in search of a safe place to park where I’ll be out of the way. I was already homeless but I just lost my full time job. Just need a safe out of the way spot until I find a new job I’ve been applying non stop.

I would for sure avoid the city proper. Maybe over at the big Walmart on route 80?

Or what about the big high way gas stations?

I loved out of my car for 9 months in new haven back in 2009. OP’s harassed me relentlessly. I was young and dumb and never thought to leave the downtown areas. If I were to be forced into that life again I would try Walmarts and highway rest stops i think…

True the route 80 Walmart has a rest area!! Thanks so much for the advice I’m in that same boat, tired of taps on the window telling me to leave. Luckily this is only temporary I’ll change it up and avoid the city.

I hope this all improves quickly.

If you need a warm clothing or boots let me know. I know how hard these winters are. From previously mentioned experience.

I’m not willing to give cash for myriad reasons, but if you need clothing or something I can buy and drop off for you, do let me know.

If you’re ever in the area and you have hot hands I’d be your biggest fan. It’s just good to know someone’s been through this mess and come out alright!

I will pick some up Tomrrow morning at that route 80 Walmart. I pass by on my way to work around 8am, so look for a DM from me around 8:20am.

To be blunt I’d rather you didn’t see my car or anything. I’ll walk over to where you are parked.

I’m not trying to sound like a prick. When I was homeless I was not a good person.

What’s wrong with him seeing your car? Like what could he possibly do with knowing what you drive. You drive by people all the time.

This person is seemingly going out of their way to help someone unprompted. We should have empathy and respect for whatever boundaries they wish to draw

Aight well I drive past this Walmart 5 days a week and I have the hand warmers in my car. You reply here or in chat and I’ll get them to you. Also grabbed you some rain gear

How do you afford a phone?

Imagine being homeless, looking for work, and NOT having a phone. I'll give you some time to work out why a phone would be an absolute top priority for someone in that position.

Sorry you're hard up at the moment, OP. I lived in my car for a year, so I know your pain.

My recommendation is the 76 truck stop in Wallingford, if it's not too far. It's a safe place to park overnight, and has cheap showers that you can use for like, $1.

Also check into calling 211. I don't know what the resources are like in New Haven right now, but when I was homeless they were able to get me food and a temporary place to stay a few years ago.

Good luck. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Hey bub I don’t know your skill set but if you’re interested I can 99 percent likely get you some kind of restaurant job. As far as the parking thing, try westville by hard street. It’s a good neighborhood but not too uppity so people prolly won’t be up your ass.

Hey I’ve never worked in the food industry but I have references, I’m a hard worker, and I’m just really trying to get full time hours again

The entire food service industry is so understaffed I can almost guarantee you a job doing something. Send me a DM

If you need a night out of your car (especially if it’s cold!) know that nonstop during the winter the city runs several warming centers for overnight stays. You can access the hours and addresses via 211. Some of them have beds and serve meals, etc. I would recommend calling 211 to access warning centers, shelter if you’re interested, and possibly getting connected to case management resources to assist you along your journey. HOUSING- Also, look into the “I’m Home initiative run by New Haven (livable cities initiative website) as long as you fall below 300% of the federal poverty line they can pay a security deposit and sometimes utilities startup costs for you! Best of luck. Stay safe and warm.

There's a soup kitchen at Wall and Temple Streets near New Haven Green called Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen (DESK). Hot meal, and a chance to socialize.

Keep a window cracked open in your vehicle on the street side, not sidewalk side, to let moisture out. Fogged up windows draws a ton of attention, and the mold/mildew that grow in the moist environment is dangerous to your lungs. If you have a sunroof, leaving it cracked open while you're away from vehicle will help air it out without inviting thieves.

I know you diddnt ask for anything other than a spot to park but have you considered instacart? You have all the requirements already, and honestly if you're willing to put in the time and work from when stores open to close then you can honestly get yourself out of this situation relatively quickly. While still applying for jobs. It can be inconsistent sometimes but I do know people who do it as a full time job and it's easy, they also will provide perks like money off on oil changes and gas.

If I remember correctly all the big delivery apps currently have a waiting list that is months long, unfortunately. Might be able to find work with a new app though like GoPuff or something.

New haven still has funding for the CASTLE program and some others through LCI and THE CONNECTION. They all offer assistance with rental, security deposits, back rent ect. I was facing an eviction and they helped me .I hope your situation looks up .

Also why not do Uber eats , door dash , go puff or Amazon flex ? You got the car . That's half the battle.

Buy a cheap car cover, it's like a sock you slide over the whole car. It'll help you with privacy and laying low in residential areas. Almost no one is going to actually touch the cover to lift it and check if someone's in there. And it's also not that weird to see a car with a cover running, remote start and all. Mind your car's exhaust though.
