People down voting don't understand. If someone lives above you you will hear every movement, and it's not their fault. And no they shouldn't choose to not walk at night. If this is a real issue for you don't live below people. Also if you live in a city expect it sound like a freight train outside your window day and night. If that's not your speed move somewhere quieter

Yeah that's what it's like in every apartment I've ever lived in in a city . Quiet hours aren't really a thing unless it's an over 55 community

Well I’m in my forties and have lived in a number of apartments over 2+ decades. I’ve never dealt with anything this bad.

I really don't recommend new haven. It's a younger wilder town then Stamford If you have these kinds of concerns

My wife and I had a similar issue but not only with the woman upstairs stomping, but also a woman with dementia next to use screaming at night to get her husband's attention from another room.... Who died a decade prior. We moved to an apartment that was top floor and had a much better time. We've since bought a house, but while we had it top floor was definitely the way to go.

We are looking for a house in Milford. There are very few rentals in Milford that we can get short-term, so we are looking in New Haven. We don’t have tons of options right now.

Either way, I’m from Dallas. I am very familiar with city life. This is just the worst apartment I’ve ever lived in, and the most expensive by far.

You can definitely find a place in New Haven. I have lived in apartments there plenty and rarely had a serious noise issue. Sorry you're going through it. Inconsiderate neighbors suck.

It's quiet as hell. All the apartments are 1 bedroom, so I don't think I've ever seen a kid... but the best part? Cat and dog friendly and there's a dog park. All the units are also currently being remodeled.

Yep, that is what we are looking for. That is what we wanted initially, but there was just nothing available when we moved here in October. This apartment was our last option and we didn't even get to see it before we signed. That was a mistake. Thank you for commiserating.

Double check Facebook marketplace. There are a lot of people posting recently of lease takeovers and most are only a few months.

That's ok, we realize we probably have to sign a 12-month. We just need to make sure there's a way to break it (usually a fee and notice).

Edit: Not sure why I’m being downvoted. Nobody will give us month to month. We are looking for a house so that means we have to break the lease if we find one. I can’t help it that I need somewhere to live in the interim, but nobody wants to lease for less than 12 months. Landlords are paid a lot of money if we have to break a lease. They win in the end and we lose.

If you want to stay close to new haven, there are a few apartment / condo complexes in Hamden that all look really good. Anything along Whitney Ave will be a great neighborhood and Whitney is a straight drive into the heart of new haven.

2. Ashmun Flats - I lived there, also in Science Park
3. 500 Blake Street Apartments, Westville Area, had friends there
4. 131-147 Cottage Street Apartments, East Rock, have a friend there.

I'm sure there are lots of other good options too. With your price range, you have options.

Town Walk in Hamden is nice, in the "New haven" area

Westville Village has 2 bedroom 2 bath options. My wife and I moved out of there in November and there was just a fee for breaking the lease.

You've been lucky! When we had a fire in our home, we rented a condo. Top floor. People below and next to us smoked so much pot that it was like we had been smoking in our rental. Not to mention the "ladies " coming in and out on certain nights after midnight and keeping us awake. Then there's the God awful music. People need to realize that when you live in an apartment or condo, that you are responsible to your neighbors to not disturb them.

Of course and they used to have a pool/gym. Lease was 6months and a year. For us it was really quiet

they have office spaces, just not official second bedrooms, though I understand completely.

If you’re trying to rent month to month you could try a long term airbnb. I’m a travel nurse so I usually stay in fully furnished airbnbs for 3 months at a time. However you’d then have to find somewhere for all of your own furniture etc.

Yeah. That’s the crux of it, plus we have cats. So it wouldn’t work. That’s why we just need to be sure we can pay a fee to break a lease whenever we finally can get a home. We’ve rented from a private landlord in the past and there was no out. Like, even if we died the lease was due in full. So that’s why we’re stuck looking for apartments. We just moved to CT in October so don’t know areas very well yet.

In re the broken toilet, that's a housing code habitability violation, most likely - contact housing code enforcement and they'll either contact the landlord themselves or they'll send someone out.

Sorry to hear about your situation OP. For under $4k/mo, your options are wide for a 2b/2ba. I would suggest The Union over a new construction like Audubon or Corsair because the Union was a retrofit from a commercial building, hence floors are SOLID. Like, concrete so no creaky floor noises and noise from other units will deflect MUCH better. Plus location can’t be beat as you’re in the heart of downtown, if that’s important.

Virtually all apartments will have thinnish walls, because they save on construction costs that way (and you can be sure the new ones like Audubon will be), so some noise will propagate. So your best bet is to find a corner/end unit where the bedrooms are or make sure the bedroom is adjacent to another unit’s kitchen. Why? Because you get significant additional noise insulation from the cabinets, appliances and tiling. And better if that adjacent unit is a studio or 1 bed because that probably rules out loud parties or at least young families that’s causing your current issues. Good luck.

Not sure if you d do Hamden but I live in Lakewood - super quiet . Idk about availability but look on liveatfranklin.com Their other properties are said to be pretty good also .

I agree, except we have two bathrooms (so another toilet), therefore I don’t think I have anything legally to get them on just yet. When we moved in, it took them 3 weeks to fix a variety of issues including a window that wouldn’t open and a water leak. I was pretty close to contacting someone at that time.

We are looking specifically for a top floor unit right now, which is what we wanted when we came to CT - for all of the reasons you mentioned - but couldn’t find any availability at the time.

We are in our forties and have lived in a number of apartments. This building just has exceptionally bad construction (my entire apartment shakes just when I walk normally) and when you add inconsiderate residents, it’s a bad mix.

How much was the fee?

For $4k/month you may be able to get a penthouse in 360 State. It's downtown so you will have traffic/ambulance noise but it may be quieter at the top. They do shorter term leases as well

A few new MetroStar apartments in Milford downtown on top of train line I believe hit your budget. Though still shocked at how much they are for being so far outside NYC.

Yes. Actually we stopped by one today and put in an application! Still crazy expensive but less than what we’re paying in Stamford. Which is also crazy, considering I have zero maintenance and constant noise. I’ve had a broken toilet for 3 days.

You are paying a premium price for Stamford.

If possible, and if working from home go further east up the coast, or inland to greater Hartford. Prices will be lower and quality higher.

While I sympathize with your situation, this "toddler has no rules" statement is absurd. Have you ever met a toddler? They don't understand the problem. Even if the parents are world class child psychologists, it takes time to teach a child anything, especially one who may understand a dozen words. Definitely a good call for you to move.

This is solid advice. Wait until the quads and dirt bikes hit the streets in the spring. For $4k/month they could get a nice place in Branford by the shore.
