I'm all for taking some measures to cut the red light-running and the obnoxious loud cars and bikes. Bring on the traffic cameras.

I do late night deliveries and sometimes I have to run red lights that never change. I'm sitting there for no reason at 3am with no other cars.
I'm for better enforcement of dangerous running of red lights obviously, but I don't want to get an automatic ticket because the stupid light hasn't turned green for 5 minutes at 3 in the morning.
I personally think you should be able to treat red lights as stop signs between 2am-5am or something like that. It's ridiculous how long I just sit at lights for absolutely no reason. Like it probably is close to an hour of my time that I'm out doing deliveries in a night.

They do this in Puerto Rico. I don’t know the exact times, but sometime after midnight the lights all go flashing red (essentially a stop sign) since there’s hardly anyone on the road at that time. Good idea if you ask me.

This is how pedestrians get killed.

I'm not saying you can blow through lights, I'm saying that when it's the middle of the night, you stop at the light, look around, make sure it's clear and continue.
I'm out super late almost every night, the roads are empty. There is no reason to sit at a red light with no other cars coming. You would still have to yield to pedestrians and its very rare I see anyone on the sidewalks at that hour anyway.
How is that any different than a stop sign? They either need to allow us to continue, or change more lights to flashing red during late night hours like some areas already do.

I'm sympathetic, but I think the solution is a review of light timing and maybe some blinking reds during the wee hours. When people start to see stopping at red lights a suggestion, it can get to be an awfully slippery slope.

I'm fine with switching them to flashing, thats already a thing but so few lights do it.

Considering the fact that half the lights in New Haven are no longer functioning as designed, and instead flash red for one side and yellow for the other, this will be the default soon enough!

How quick from red light cameras and noise alerts to automated tickets sent by mail, big no from me

Backseat policing in my opinion would only inconvenience good drivers and not punish bad drivers

How would cameras that automatically send a ticket to people who run red lights inconvenience good drivers, or fail to punish bad ones?
lazy-but-talented t1_j5kyu3r wrote
It would needlessly clog up an already struggling violation appeals process. Would overwhelmingly confuse drivers who are used to right on red which would need to be posted, fewer right on red intersections would only congest intersections more and lead to longer wait times. Won’t deter dangerous drivers who’ll keep violating anyways.
on the noise side if relying on digital location of high-noise offenders to dispatch a unit a similar system has already failed in the shotspotter gunshot detector

Harley owners would be be pissed. They're the loudest things on the roads, and fucking infuriating when they ride home waking up everybody along their route after the bars close.

They have license plate covers and spray so you can block your plate… some people use these to avoid the electronic tolls or cameras
Ambitious-Fig-5382 t1_j5ew4u3 wrote
How is that not illegal? I took a picture of one of these recently but of course I can't report it because I have no idea what the plate# is.
bigtuna732 t1_j5ewu1b wrote
I’m sure it’s illegal but the people with these don’t care and most police departments don’t have the manpower to go around stopping everyone with these on their cars.
brewski t1_j5fekzz wrote
Nor do they have the manpower to watch every intersection. If they capture a photo of the driver, there may be a way to track the car owner. Or whatever. Some people are going to circumvent the system, but at the risk of a significantly higher penalty. They will catch a lot of reckless bastards with the cameras.

Automatic traffic enforcement. Lights, speeding and sound. Driving is a privilege, not a right and so many assholes are killing and injuring people. Cops don’t do enforcement, bring on the robots.
