New Haven sits “between two rocks.” West Rock and East Rock are both state parks and have great hiking. I don’t think you can go in there and start digging and hammering away with a pick axe, but if you pick up a few loose pieces and put them in your backpack you should be fine. Also, Sleeping Giant state park in Hamden is great.

Edit: East Rock is a city park, not a state park.

As someone who has spent a lot of time at the bar at barcade, there are a good amount of dates for sure at there.

But there is also a large solo bar goers scene there, too. Not as many people fly solo on, say, a Friday night, but Sunday afternoon? Tuesday at 7pm? Wednesday at 11? The place has more of a mix of both tinder dates, friends, and solo folks.

You will have much better options if you don't need to be within walking distance. There are neighborhoods that are quite affordable near the school, but they may or may not be in your comfort zone. I'm not familiar with the public bus service to Southern but that might open some doors. It's worth noting that all city buses have a bike rack on the frontier, so you can bike that last mile when the weather is amenable.
