The D&R Canal Towpath is a short walk from the Bound Brook Station, on the Raritan Valley Line.

ETA: maybe ask on r/nycbike ?

EETA: ride the NEC to Princeton Jct, take the Dinky to Princeton, & hop over to the D&R Towpath by Lake Carnegie.

Also easy to get to from New Brunswick via the Northeast Corridor.

Erm, I'd debate that. The D&R towpath ends at Landing Lane. Can you provide a map of the routes from the train station to the towpath?

It's maybe a 5 minute bike ride down College Ave to George St. Takes you straight to Landing Lane Bridge. If you don't want to ride on George St you can take College Ave to Buccleuch Park that's parallel to George St and take that until you get to Landing Lane.

Along with your Princeton Junction suggestion, you can also go down to the Hamilton station and get to the towpath via Carnegie Road on the other side of The Crossings at Hamilton Station apartment complex. Train to Hamilton, ride your bike all the way back to New Brunswick. Not a bad way to spend a nice day.

You can also go down Albany street make a left on river road and you have a nice path through Johnson Park not too far down.

The train service out to High Bridge is not optimal, & geared primarily to commuters. OP should check the schedule carefully.

Yeah I just saw that it doesn’t run on weekends

You can get from the Manasquan train station to the Manasquan Reservoir (5 mile bike path) via the capital to coast trail. On the way back, if you want to change things up, you can take Belmar Boulevard to the Belmar beach and ride on the beach back to Manasquan or another shore train station

Columbia Trail through Ken Lockwood gorge begins in High Bridge.

Henry Hudson trail crosses the Shore Line in Matawan.

D&R Canal trail can be accessed from the Dinky line to Princeton from Princeton Junction.

Another commenter mentioned the proximity of the Edgar Felix trail to the Manasquan RR station.

The Raritan River end of the D&R Canal Path is only 1.3 miles from the New Brunswick train station.

Columbia Trail: take RVL to High Bridge, weekdays only. Trailhead is just 1/4 mile up main street.

D&R: closest station would be Bound Brook, also on RVL. Google D&R Canal Lock 11.

HHT: less than 1 mile from NJCL's Aberdeen-Matawan station to the Stillwell St trailhead on the southern half or the Gerard Ave trailhead on the northern half.

TIP: turn on the biking layer in Google Maps.

Also highly recommend the Columbia Trail. Very scenic, particularly going from High Bridge through Ken Lockwood Gorge.

Not too far from the Madison train station is the Loantaka Brook reservation. Not too long of a trail but I always used to love to ride my bike on it. There’s also the trail directly next to the train station that leads straight towards morristown. Used to love riding both of them on a super long trip when I went to school there.

Ive done quite a few paths and trails using NJT or Metro North or LIRR though Long Island should only be done in the warmer months.

You can ride the Delaware and Raritan Canal trail from New Brunswick to Hamilton,NJ , its about 40 miles , i've walked 15 miles it between Hamilton to Princeton. Its relatively quiet not too many people.

They recently completed a heritage route south of Bordentown. So you could ride the Delaware & Raritan Canal trail from near the Cass Street RiverLINE station in Trenton , you access it via the Riverfront Park and Lamberton Rd and that will bring you to Bordentown which is about 8 miles. The Heritage route will bring you down Roebling and you can bike via the Back roads to Burlington which is about 9 miles.

On the NY side you have the Aqueduct pathway which runs from Yonkers to Irvington with a small detour in Tarrytown and North of Downtown Tarrytown to Scarborough and a small detour in Ossining and then from Ossining to the Croton Harmon Station or the Croton Dam. The Best Access is from Greystone Metro North Station. In Tarrytown you can alternatively ride along the Riverfront into Sleepy Hollow and access the trail from Gory Brook Rd entrance.

If you go mid-week, the High Bridge station is very close to the Columbia Trail, and the Mount Olive station is close to the Sussex Branch Trail (which connects with the Paulinskill Valley Trail).

Unfortunately NJ Transit doesn't run service to those stations on weekends... and service during the week in the direction you'd need for a ride is pretty limited.

The Columbia Trail is beautiful: highly recommend.

Came to say Columbia Trail as others have mentioned. It starts in High Bridge close to the train station there.

From the Princeton Junction train station you can ride to the Mercer County park. Th closest entrance, north side of the lake, is single track trails eventually reaching the East entrance and a multi-mile paved bike path. Research it, it could be fun. From this station you could also go towards Princeton and cross the D&R canal trail as well. Both are fun.

Henry Hudson Trail. Aberdeen-Matawan station pretty much in the middle of it. Can go directly to Matawan station from Hoboken I believe. You will have to bike half a mile or so to get to either side of it from the station though.
