Serious PSA for everyone. Im not sure if this species can spread Lyme disease but if you find a tick attached to you go to the doctor. Lyme is easy to treat early but if you don't recognize the symptoms and/or let it go, you could end up like me with crippling joint pain and a myriad of other horrible symptoms that still fuck me to this day. You do not want it believe me.

I believe you. I dated a girl who had Lyme and she felt miserable and dizzy like all the time.

my son was bit by a lonestar tick last summer (we had it tested) in monmouth county. The meat allergy is not permanent but can last for several years. Thankfully he was ok.

I’m glad he was okay. What was the meat allergy like? Did he get sick from it? Rash? Anything like that?

My doctors treated me for mono for six weeks before they realized it was actually Lyme disease. Oops. In their defense it was the early 90s

shit fucked me up hardcore back in the day. only like 1/3 of people get the bullseye rash, and ticks usually bite where you can't notice them.

also the standard generic "western blot" test that most dr's give is trash....i tested negative like 3x. u gotta get ur serum sent out to special labs and see what bands you have on the spectrum

They're still around. An article I read though states that once the local predators learn they can safely eat these bugs, we should start to see a dip in their numbers. It's going to take a few years though.

Outside of a few weirdly specific hotspots it seemed like that was already happening in South Jersey? They didn’t seem as prevalent. Or maybe I just got used to them.

tuck your pants into your socks and you can prevent many ticks from latching onto you

NJDevil69 t1_j9r829g wrote

Still not enough. I had a friend do that then walk through tall grass like an idiot. His pants had at least 9 ticks trying to burrow into the seams of the pant legs. While the pants stopped them, they still needed to be plucked off and drowned in alcohol.

The way around this is to treat your pants with the permethrin chemical before you go hiking or such. That clinches the defense against them.

Shit, tall grass is a haven for chiggers. Ticks are bad, but fuuuuuck chiggers, they’re a nightmare.

Can we just start actively breeding possums and guinea hens to release into ever acre of land w/ a tree? I do not want any of the shit these little bastards carry.

I'm sure the ability to have some chickens will help in this issue too bad nj is full of laws and regulations to keep you from having things that help its people

Chickens eat ticks on top of other things. But mostly places towns in nj don't allow the owning of chickens and limit quantity etc
