Dekay's brown, as mentioned. Put it back outside, it will keep the rodent population in check. Edit: another user brought to my attention that Dekay's do not eat rodents, but primarily feed on small invertebrates. Still good to have, especially if you have a garden.

That is the problem with what we call common names, actually. There are probably a dozen or more species of snakes in the US that people call rat snakes, but they are all distinct species. Here in NJ, I believe we have black rat snakes, which are different from these guys.

Snakes are common throughout most of new jersey. Even urban areas will have snakes in parks and wooded areas.

Brown snake harmless. I freaked out when I found one similar a few years ago laying in the sun on my patio. Neighbor came over and told me they are common and live in the rocky area in our yard

Could be a Northern Water Snake. Although the ones I’ve seen around here have an orangish tint to the underside.

Edited to add: I think the brown snake ID is correct.

Only the eastern rattler and cottonmouth are dangerous snakes in this state. That's neither. The only dangerous wildlife here is bipedal. The rest are scared of the humans.

Garter snake. There’s lots of different color morphs. And they can be surprisingly large.

downright huge even if you're going to call every snake you see a garter. That python? It's a Garter. The copperhead over there? Also a garter. This garter pictured is one of the "Dekays Brown Snake" ones, and you can tell because of the way it is.
