My car's check engine light doesn't come on when my car is turned on. Will I fail the inspection because of this? I read NJ is emissions only.

If the check engine light has to deal with emissions you will fail… if it’s just a brake sensor or something you will pass… but I imagine it’s something to do with emissions..

There is also a set time or miles to trigger the sensor to pass. So you can not just erase it and go through inspection

Your question is confusing. Are you saying that your check engine light is not working, as in it doesn’t even turn on briefly with the rest of the lights during startup? Or are you saying that you reset the light or disconnected the battery and that made the light turn off? If there are no stored codes in the OBD computer, and the OBD is in a “system ready” state, and there is no CEL, you should pass inspection.

The car has to be in a ready state to be able to pass. If you've cleared a code, it won't be ready until you complete a drive cycle. A scanner would tell you if the car is ready or not ready.

As for how to complete a drive cycle, that varies by manufacturer but generally you need to drive some number of miles at various speeds including highways speeds, stop and go, etc.

The check engine light turning on with the ignition is a self test and will generate a fault if doesn't work
