Ocean Grove. I've adored it since i was a child.

Deal? Not sure I would use the word quaint.

If you find Deal quaint you are gonna love some places further south. Ocean Grove, Avon by the Sea, Bay Head, Lavalette, Beach Haven, Ocean City, Cape May. The list goes on.

Ooo I've heard great things about Lavalette. Going to add that one for sure.

Ocean grove. Super quaint place to stay, and a baseball throw away from Asbury Park night life and boardwalk

A baseball throw is such a cutely American unit of measurement lol, I love it

OG is nice but crazy crowded and parking a nightmare. Plus weirdo religious restrictions (can’t go on the beach on “sabbath”,wtf, are we in Afghanistan). Try Avon, a couple towns south.

Ocean Grove was founded in 1869 as an outgrowth of the camp meeting movement in the United States, when a group of Methodist clergymen, led by William B. Osborn and Ellwood H. Stokes, formed the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association to develop and operate a summer camp meeting site on the New Jersey seashore.[14] By the early 20th century, the popular Christian meeting ground became known as the "Queen of Religious Resorts."[15] The community's land is still owned by the camp meeting association and leased to individual homeowners and businesses. Ocean Grove remains the longest-active camp meeting site in the United States.

It’s a fascinating place. I just have an issue with church groups telling me when I can swim in the ocean.

In the 80s you couldn’t drive on Sundays. They had chains across the few streets that led out of town.

You can swim in the ocean on Sundays there.

Before noon? The beach is closed until noon because they think you should be in church. https://www.oceangrove.org/visiting-the-beach. That’s messed up and an abuse of authority.

If your waiting for the lifeguard to be on duty, sorry it’s closed. I don’t see anyone making you get up and go if you’re there before

BlissfulGreen2 t1_jdt6ibi wrote

I don’t understand the comment. If you go onto the sand, the police ticket you.

embekay13 t1_jdt78j2 wrote

I’ve never seen anyone patrol the beach like that, as someone who used to frequent the area. But maybe I’m wrong!

Agreed. Ocean Grove is weird, I don't see the hype at all. They have like two good ice cream shops and that's it. Weird religious fanatics comprise of most of the town.

Strathmere, not that it is much of a town being part of Upper Township in Cape May County.

kiLLxander OP t1_jdrrug8 wrote

Cool. Gonna add this to my list!

Is it an architecturally pre war type town?

2

SailingSpark t1_jds69m1 wrote

It was, last time I was there must have been 20 years ago. I am sure it's full of McMansions now, like most of the shore.

If you’re interested in architecture, Cape May has some wonderful gingerbread houses. Not been there for Xmas but from what I’ve heard the town does it well with lights. cape may architecture wiki

My boyfriend and I go there every January for a night or two, we stay at the Chateau Inn and Suites. But we also go to the beach to swim in the summer.

Lavallette - very few chain businesses, great small businesses and restaurants, gorgeous architecture, and no crime.

I'm sorry but Deal ???

I think those homes built in the early 1900s that they restore are quaint.

Strathmere. Only a handful of businesses in town, free parking and free big beaches. Town is three blocks wide at most and all rentals are walking distance. I am only telling you because I moved 2000 miles away.

LOL Deal is the furthest thing from “quaint” that I can think of. Ocean Grove is great, parts of LBI have their charm (the show place ice cream parlor comes to mind), cape may is great.

Cape may is very family paced. Nice strip of restaurants and places to stay and no boardwalk attractions so it’s quiet.

Deal is just about the least quaint town on the entire 126 mile coast. Highest average income in NJ, mostly mansions.

The homes on the cross streets from the turn of the century are pretty quaint.

Sea Isle City is great! (next to Strathmere, which I adore, too)! Sea Isle has free music a couple of nights a week, in the summertime, outside next to the beach. A lot of fun little shops and restaurants. Very cute and old fashioned in many ways. So much fun!
