Live in central jersey but willing to travel to appease my recent sushi cravings. I've been to a few omakase places in the city and I realize it might be hard to find sushi of that level in NJ, but trying to get as close to it as possible. Looking for authentic, likely japanese owned. Not that I mind the chinese/korean owned ones but sometimes I'm not in the mood for them. To clarify, if anywhere on the menu there is a section with a couple rolls called "insert town name roll" or "crazy dragon roll" or "pink lady dragon" etc, I am NOT looking for those right now.

Thanks in advance!

Ai sushi in Somerville is as authentic as it gets in central NJ.

As for your last point, this is pulled right from their website:

>If you are into more run-of-the-mill Americanized sushi rolls like the quantity over quality of that of all-you-can-eat buffets, this might not be the place for you. For example, cooked rolls like tempura rolls, vegetable rolls, California rolls, Philadelphia rolls, for example.

Sushi by Bou! They have a location in the city that’s great but also have a Jersey City location apparently!

Ai Sushi in Somerville and Ryujin in Bridgewater are the best you'll find in Central NJ.

Are these Japanese owned/ Japanese chefs? Or Korean/ Chinese owned/ operated?

Had a bad experience at a place called Sushi Bada in Suffern, NY. Haven’t seen nigiri that badly skimped/ small, too heavy handed in terms of rolling/presentation. They charged per single piece, but charged what you normally pay for 2. Quality was mediocre overall.

Example- ikura- $8.25 per piece- very, very light on roe.

Uni- $9.00 per roll. Very light on the uni- also looked like what you buy from Hmart.

Maguro- $4.80 per roll- sliced so thin it was see through.

Otoro- $9.00 per roll- same- sliced super super thin.

Sushi Kai in Fort Lee was surprisingly good. Blew my expectations away. I was belittling “NJ omakase”. Be warned that the price is as expensive as many high end NYC omakase shops though. There are two other omakase places in Fort Lee, which I haven’t been too, but have good reviews on Google.

Domo Domo in Jersey City, but granted they’re the NJ outpost of a NYC shop.

Osaka in Scotch Plains is good. I live nearby so I might have a bit of preference. The owners/chefs are Japanese so there’s that.

Try bistro1021, clark. I'm no connoisseur, but the Korean sushi chef there is not bad. Byob.

I put a recommendation AGAINST ninja sushi in north Brunswick. I’ve eaten there over 50 times in the past few years, and when I went to order food for delivery, they were extremely rude, refusing to deliver to my house 5.1 miles away, when their limit is 5 miles (their words, not mine). Keep in mind the order was also over $100 (not some small $10 order).

They’re great if you want maki but they don’t do an omakase
