It would take a fence post about 30 seconds to figure it.

Right? It’s not confusing. Growing up my mom would have me do it when I was like seven years old (yes, I know that’s illegal now in most states).

I had a bit of a moment on vacation in Florida when I pulled up and realized “oh! I gotta pump my gas again! Ok!” But that’s just because I hadn’t left the state in three years.

I prefer having someone pump my gas, it’s a nice convenience, but it isn’t exactly difficult.

This. I had to drive down to VA for a business conference a few years ago, and I was terrified I'd make an ass of myself when I had to stop for gas. Turns out it really wasn't that hard, but I'm still more than happy to have someone else get paid to do it for me.

Even those who haven’t pumped gas can. It’s not difficult.

My 87 yr old mom has never pumped gas and I doubt she would know how. I also would not want her pumping her own gas now.

My 80 yo mom moved to Florida and learned how to pump her own gas and does it all the time. Just took someone to show her once and she was good.

Follow up question, I wonder what it is like for out of state'ers to have their gas pumped for them. Do they feel it is luxurious or annoying?

That’s a really good question. My GF is from Texas and she couldn’t believe it when we just sat in the car the whole time lol. She called it an “Experience”

I was asked by my out of state friends if they have to tip them. I was told him if you want to but I never do. Wawa pay thems $15 a hour.

2

BYNX0 t1_iu2kmuq wrote

No tip. In the old days, they even gave you a quick windshield wipe and tire check, then a tip was necessary. Now, it’s just gas, which is what they get paid to do

Gotta be like going through an automatic Car Wash, vs going to one of those Car washing stations, where you get out and operate the coin op. pressure washer.

I moved here over a decade ago. When service is fast it's fine, but it's pretty annoying to have to wait for someone else to do a simple task that I've been doing for myself - along with the rest of the country - since I was a teenager.

Grew up but no longer live in NJ. When I come back, it's super annoying if I have to wait for the attendant. It's like if you were out to eat and had a bottle of water at your table, but you could not pour your own glass.

If there's no waiting then I feel neutral about it.

pantslesseconomist t1_iu1vatx wrote

I moved here from Texas 9 years ago and I find it annoying.

I have a lil car with a small tank and I find the order of operations frustrating. I often wait several minutes after my tank is full (since it's half the size of an SUV's) for them to circle back to me.

scarbunkle t1_iu1rie3 wrote

I think it's annoying. Been here 6 years, and I still stretch as long as I can between fillups bc I hate the process of having someone else pump.

Born and raised in South Jersey, 29 years.
Been away for 29 more years.
One of the last trips back the gas monkey flooded the side of my truck with gasoline. After I tore into him about what an asshole he was, he then proceeded to try and wipe the spilled fuel off with the windshield squeegee! No thank you, it's annoying. Get the fuck away from my truck.

I can if I absolutely need to, just prefer not to.

Daughter, son and hubby all can pump too.

DIL loves when she visits and has her tank filled up when leaving NJ.

BTW, son was taught by college friends on his 1st road trip. Daughter was taught by one of my friends while traveling.

I remember when I was 13 my mom took me on a business trip to California. The first time we had to fuel up we sat at the pump for a good 10 minutes before it occurred to us that we had to do it ourselves.

BYNX0 t1_iu2kwwn wrote

Just please keep in mind that is illegal here. Sometimes you’re waiting for 10+ minutes, and I can’t blame you, but try not to

2

Seahawk70 t1_iuafjr4 wrote

I always do and will continue to. It’s usually appreciated by the gas pumpers. These are my local gas stations where I have been going for years. There are many other things that people should be worried about in this state than someone pumping their own gas. If I go to a large chain like Costco or a large Wawa .. I let them do it if the attendant is there.

In the days before you could just insert your credit card to pay, I would get anxious because I didn’t know the procedure. Do you have to go inside and pay? Before or after you pump? I was afraid of looking like an idiot.

Lived in Jesey my whole life. Driving over 30 years. 100% I would like to be able to pump my own gas. Drives me nuts to have to wait for gas attendant. Usually one guy taking care of at least 4 pumps. I don't even care about the possible savings. I just want to pull in swipe, pump, and go.

Self serve sucks if you want to pay cash, because you have to walk in and pay the cashier first, then go pump, and if you want to fill it, you need to go back inside to collect your change.
Credit cards are a little bit better, but because every pump is different, it is hard to tell if someone slapped a skimmer on one, that an attendant would be more likely to notice.

This just happened to me. I was in Delaware for a few days and decided i needed gas before i came home. I pulled up and thought to myself, shit, I'm going to have to pump my own, I hope I remember how. It was absolutely easy with no issues, but I will admit I hesitated.

Hardest part is paying with a credit card sometimes. Some pumps want you to keep it in while others don’t.
