We're planning to move to New Jersey in coming month. I have few questions,

The commute into the city from either is fine.
There is a state income tax and sales tax. Be prepared to have your mind blown when you see what the real estate taxes and rents are.
I personally love Montclair. The shops, the restaurants, the medical care quality and availability (Yea Summit Medical Group!), the Wellmont Theater, the selection of wellness and self-care services ... It's lovely, and very walkable.
Have already experienced the blown mind :) I though moving a bit away will reduce the price but man I was wrong! It's all same!
Montclair & Bloomfield have good & bad areas of both. I personally would choose Montclair because IMHO I thinks it's a nicer town. They are similar commutes because they border one another. Check out Little Falls, which is next to Upper Montclair. That is where I grew up (I live in Dallas now) & I would suggest that to anyone.

It's decent when it's not triple digits up here in DFW! Lotsa luck in NJ. It's very diverse there & easy to go see other states nearby for the weekend! Enjoy being near the ocean also! I miss that!

Both are good for families, just depends on how much money you have as Montclair is more expensive.

Aside from state and fed tax no other tax that I’m aware of.
No tax on food or clothes btw.
Everything else is around 7% sales tax, I think cars were 6.23% (probably off by a bit).
If you’re living up north I hope you have above average money at the least haha
If you live off the montclair-boonton line you will have a direct train into penn station NY, it’s a very doable commute. I would try to live within walking distance from the station as having to drive & park at the station will just add more stress.
Montclair is a beautiful town but it’s gotten extremely expensive. There aren’t really any dangerous parts of town but generally south of Bloomfield Ave is less nice.
Bloomfield is cheaper but some parts are sketchy, specifically the downtown area around Bloomfield Ave. It’s a block by block thing so hard to say without visiting the area for yourself.
If you live in NJ and work in NYC you will be paying NY State income tax and probably zero NJ tax (since the taxes you pay to NY get credited off your NJ tax bill).
Just a suggestion talk to a real estate agent in those areas. You might find a hidden gem in those areas.
so you're thinking the part of montclair where the homes are only 1.5 mill might be a bit slummy???? lol....
If I could afford a 1.5 million home I would not be asking this question, this was about the affordable areas.
There are several new/newish apartment complexes that include parking along the Montclair-Booton Line in redeveloped stations areas at Bay St Station in Montclair, Bloomfield station and Watsessing Station (also Bloomfield)
These seem like common questions that a cursory search could have answered

I loved renting in Montclair, things to note is to make sure where you are renting has dedicated parking. Parking is a serious, serious issue in Montclair. It's the top reason I moved, next to the ridiculous rent prices. Regarding safety, Montclair is weird where you can be in a safe area walk a street over, and not have the same warm feeling. I cant speak much about Bloomfield. Welcome to the area!
