Baggallini makes water-resistant, antibacterial bags. They are lightweight and resilient, and available in many styles and sizes. I have several, my oldest one is 12 years old and I’ve used it on weeks-long treks in Europe almost annually, and it still looks good. They are well made and reasonably priced.

Backpack is the best because it is cheap, has more security options and has more room, people who use briefcases are still stuck in the 50s lol and think people care what you bring to the office.

Can’t give you a specific but just look into any kind of outdoors brand ie the north face / Patagonia etc. you’ll want it to have some kind of weather proofing for the fall/winter

If you’ll be going through the bag during the trip for your coffee or a book or whatever, I’d do a cross-body bag. Going in and out of a backpack more than once is a pain. Baggallini is a good brand - maybe something like this? https://www.baggallini.com/the-only-bag/OOB760-BG.html
