you're not a real 287 commuter until you know how to get home from any exit that is between where you get on and where you get off. i used to commute from metropark back to bridgewater (so the parkway to exit 13) and you best believe i could navigate my way home from every exit that existed between the two, because you never know with 287 traffic. let's face it, the road was designed in a different time when there were a lot fewer people in this part of the state than there are today.

Nothing like a 20-minute commute turning into 2-hour adventure to unsuccessfully take multiple detours.

Personally 287 is one of the worse road in the state especially from exit 1 thru 12. (and a nightmare between 4-9 especially at rush hours). I travelled from Middletown to Wayne for 25 years - average commute 1 - 1.15 minutes; they move our office to Bridgewater - never got home in under 1.45 eventhough less miles.

North of Boonton where the pavement changes from asphalt to concrete, it’s total death race territory. Wide open with limited places for speed traps. It’s incredibly common to see supercars in the late hours bomb the road at well over 100 mph. Terrible, but awesome. Also terrible.

In 2004 I bought a new car, and in the first five weeks I lost three windshields. My insurance company was not pleased, nor was I. None since then, either. The dumbest one was when a guy towing a tiny boat neglected to secure his fishing tackle, and a lead sinker bounced out of the boat directly into the center of my brand new windshield.

That’s 22.

Once a week I see a new large red stain on the highway from what used to be a deer. I’m not exaggerating in the slightest lol. Occasionally there’s scraps of hair.

Several years ago I was on my way up to Ringwood via 287 and had a rock kicked up and hit my windshield. Scared the shit out of me.

I never got the windshield replaced, but the crack never spread.

I bought a new car two years ago. First time I merged on the highway (287) I was stuck behind a dump trunk dropping gravel all over the highway and chipped the shit out of my front bumper and hood.

I once ran over a cinder block on 287, it fell off a truck. Tire, rim, the whole nine yards.

287 for me means that ridiculously dangerous intersection with 24, yeah no thanks. I'd rather waste an extra 20 minutes using the GSP in bumper to bumper traffic than brave that 24 interchange.

The exit 4 on ramp southbound is so fucking idiotic

Why is it two lanes and not just one? Why are there no barriers so people don’t cut across?

They could literally fix it with just jersey barriers and fix so much of the problem. The two lanes need to merge together before joining 287.

One time a small plane crashed on/near 287.

Horrible for those involved but it was on brand for 287.

You’re right as long as you leave early and don’t drive the part by 208 or 80 or 10 or 206, or go on a day where they are doing unannounced construction or some rando in a jalopey flips his rust bucket- yeah it’s great! 🤣

I did the commute along that stretch for about a decade. Got stuck in traffic due to fatality at least 4 times a year. After awhile I decided it was better for my health and sanity to spend the extra time on 202.

Nowhere else have I seen the DOT decide the best option is to just put up “high crash area” signs and call it a day…

Trainlover1279 t1_iycts01 wrote

You can put signs up abd flashing warning signs. Will not change how they drive. 287 in that area is like a racetrack.

That’s the good stretch. From Bridgewater south it’s a complete fustercluck. Fro Morristown north it’s also a bit of a mess.

Mornings I would drive from old bridge along rt 9 and to 440/287 and get off at exit 10. The only good parts was skipping the Driscoll bridge and parkway garbage, and then that sweet break in traffic from exit 5 to that weigh station by exit 8. Everything else was pure luck I wasn’t the next car accident victim.

Wtf. I drive allll over the state to work, and 287 is by far the WORST road I have driven on.

Edit: got confused between 287 and 295. 295 is the sucky one. 287 is meh for me.
