It's been down to one lane in each direction for a while now.

Does anyone know when they're planning to restore it to two lanes?

Getting to the Holland tunnel has been a nightmare.

I'm kind of surprised there's no reporting on this in the press.

I've seen this with other projects too, you might get an article to the effect of "construction will last until November 15th" but then no follow up if the date slips.

Maybe that's part of the reason it always slips, no accountability.

larry higgs from the ledger is really the only reporter who regularly covers transportation issues.

the dates are never fixed anyway. weather and other issues do occur which leads dates to slip and there's not a ton anyone can always do about it.

No idea but I hear you it's been brutal. 1 lane both way and often times there's no one even working on it.

I have become numb to the traffic on 508 at this point. When it originally came up, I posted about it in the JC sub. I called and was told the project would last years but then someone else posted about a portal bridge, and the construction would only last until around now (mid-November). Trying to add the link below to my thread.

One thing I'm surprised about is that after closing down the lanes, they didn't bother to retime (or remove) the traffic lights at both ends of the chokepoint.

They make a bad situation much much worse, and that would be a simple fix for the duration.

They should have gotten rid of that whole stretch of roadway and extended I-280 to the tunnel.

Yes they should have, but there was a highway revolt when they were building 280. (That's why it's so narrow when it goes through Newark, and went you have to exit to stay on it).

The same folks are the r/fuckcars type now.

What do you mean you have to exit to stay on it? I know there was a revolt when they tried to extend 280 to I-78. That's why the First Street exit in Newark just ends abruptly. The Newark-Jersey City "turnpike" is one of the ugliest and most convoluted stretches of roadway in the state.

When you go eastbound on 280 approaching Newark, if you stay on the highway, the highway abruptly ends and you end up on local streets in Newark.

To continue on 280, you need to take 2 exit lanes on the right, which takes you on a section of 280 which is suddenly 2 lanes in each direction without any shoulders.

That's because they never continued 280, they just connected it to a previous road, and renamed it 280.

I always take 1-9 to 139. It’s free and brings you to the same place :)
