I was actually at the Neptune one recently (Friday) and saw both 70% and 50% off items... I will say that they seem to have less items available but I didn't notice anything on the % off that felt different from normal.

Yeah, I was a loyal Shop Rite customer for many years. I moved to Florida for four years and returned last year.

Now I shop Aldi, Lidl and Trader Joe's. Considerably less expensive.

Demand/supply, if they have more demands than they can supply, they will charge more and still have people to buy. You can order them not to, but that will not go well in long term, it would be more natural to let the market sort it out by itself, and that takes a long time.

Each shoprite is individually owned, so maybe complain to the store in question. The only time I've seen 70% was on Sushi. We are halfway between two different stores with different owners. ShopRite is worse on staple goods than competitors like Wegmans even though inflation is high. The main reason to go to ShopRite is to shop deals but that seems to be going away too.

Most ShopRite’s in Monmouth & Ocean counties are owned by the same family and I know for a fact that they have the markdowns done after 9pm. Since the store closes later in the evening, customers know this and buy out most of the best items that are still fresh.

Let’s be honest …. I buy the manager specials if I like or want what’s the deal is ..…. But ,they don’t have to offer any . You also have the option to purchase at other stores and spend your hard earned money.

I go to the West Long Branch, Belmar, Shrewsbury, Middletown, Hazlet and Neptune is the only store that plays that song…..lol!

Not to sound like a shill but if I was a shop rite manager I’d be sucking up profits wherever I could too. Grocery stores are a notoriously low margin business and considering increased cost of goods and shop rite’s entire appeal being rooted in affordability, they are probably walking a very thin line between making money and losing customers with high prices. Can’t imagine manager’s special discounts accounts for more than a tiny piece of their business so it does seem a little pointless/greedy but I’m guessing they’ve noticed they can sell these at a lower discount and people will still buy them.

If you can help it, I’d recommend just not buying it if the price isn’t right, and maybe give the feedback to management that you don’t think it’s worth it at that 30% off price point. Obviously as just one person you can’t do much to change their thinking but if more people feel the way you do, and they have to start throwing this stuff away instead of selling it, you’ll see prices start to drop again.

The Sakers own that many because they can afford to open that many. I will still shop there over Stop & Shop, Foodtown or Acme. I also shop at Lidl and Aldi for the basics. For variety of ethnic and specialty products I shop in Long Branch at Fine Fair and Asbury Park at City Supermarket.

Not just Shoprite. We are getting smaller packages for more money. Costs are beyond the affordability for the average family. Managers are catching the grief From the C Suite. I’m sure they would much rather give you a break than try and keep the greedy Suits happy.

I thought managers specials were a bit more rare these days. In the past, it was a way for stores to make extra profit on sale items. I’ll use cookies as an example, because that’s what I sold to ShopRite for about 2 decades. Say Oreos are on sale for $1.99 (a price you’ll never see these days). The store is paying $1.79 per package. At the end of the sale, a store will “buy in” on a few pallets of Oreos, and will stop buying them from the vendor until they run out. Until that time, they will put them on a managers special for something like 2 for $5, which will increase their margins and also continue to drive sales by providing a value to the customer. Everyone wins. Most vendors have switched over to a paid for performance model driven by Nielsen or IRI scan data from the registers and the stores will be compensated for how much they sell during the sale. You can run a lighter back room this way, stabilize sales, and provide incentive to put them on display while they are on sale.

Shop Rite in Palisades Park was a wasteland on Saturday. Seems like grocery shopping these days is getting a little grim, between supply chain and price inflation. $6.99 for Ruffles? I think not. Stew Leonards was pretty good albeit the meat was expensive there as well.

I definitely prefer TJ's & Wegmans. The only problem is, I'm 45 minutes away from the closest locations.

The only viable options in my area are Shoprite or Acme. There are Aldi & Lidl locations closer to me that opened in the last couple years, so I do use them from time to time.

I've found that I put up with Shoprite for essentials, then end up planning larger outings for going the 45 minutes to TJ's, Wegmans, Whole Foods, and Sprouts near Marlton.

There are two Shoprites near me. One location consistently has the manager's specials at 30%, while the other one goes between 30%-60%.

The one in Parking plays it too.

Yes, there are societal issues, but it's not always racism. Especially when it's costing the the owner money directly off the bottom line. I guarantee that they're only paying a security guard because that position prevents a bunch of shrinkage or saves them money on insurance after some previous settlements.

I use to work at the “old” Belmar store and the management made sure to mark down everything late in the evening for the deli department but the bakery was done in the morning.

I don't know where OP shops, but at the ShopRite in East Windsor, they blast "patriotic" music in the lobby... it's usually "God Bless the USA" by Lee Greenwood and it's really off-putting. But in the store, it's regular soft-rock music.

I have no idea what plastic bags cost, but I remember a long while ago, there was always a discount for bringing your own bags. Now that we all HAVE to, nothing got cheaper, just less convenient.

The one in Parsippany always had a security guard who was maybe posted at the door, maybe dealing with shoplifting I saw a few times. But definitely not a police officer.

I have a BJ's membership and buy all my meat and non-perishables there once a month or so, it saves so much money. The meat is easily half the price per pound every time. The annual $50 membership paid for itself in a single visit.

Exaaaaaactly. It’s like a recruitment tool when you walk in at that. I told my kids how bizarre it is and messed up. I wouldn’t want to go to England for example and drown in patriotic tunes as I enter a shop. The fact shoprite has the patriotic entrance, with the cops, while the owners are absolutely affiliated with the far right. Doesn’t make ya feel to good shopping there. But sadly it’s the only local store to me with good produce so I’ve little option.

used to work at shitrite for 4 years lol. one day one of the saker was there and saw me get into an argument with a customer some woman requested some wierd bread i didnt have. he felt like being a hero and told me to pull one off the rack and use it.

then later went to my manager and told him to pull me off the sandwitch counter and work the deli slicing cold cuts. thats when i said fuck this im out. i quit. it was the best thing i did in my life. fucking horrible working conditions. i couldnt take my lunch breaks or even use the bathroom if people kept coming to order sandwitches.

btw never buy precut cold cuts or premade subs. most cases they just put the expired cold cuts in them. when i worked there we refused to do it and toss them in the trash when they were not looking.

I stopped shopping there when my local store started to stock more premium pasta sauces and the only choices you had were Ragu or Prego and an $8 jar of some premium stuff. Also when their Bowl & Basket generic brand (you can't kid a kidder--its still a house brand) was selling for $5.99. so now I shop at Lidl and save considerably.

It depends on the listed expiration date and the brand/quality. I've noticed the pricier items like organic chicken, angus beef are marked 30% off the day of or before expiration, but sometimes the day of, or a day later, it can be 50 or 70% off. Deli meats are usually always 50 or 70% off. ShopRite Skillman, NJ for reference.
