So I gotta go home to New Jersey for thanksgiving (Currently in NY), but I've realized that my dog is too big for the carrier I got. And I can't get a bigger one in time for the 23rd, which is when I'm heading back. So my question is how likely am I to get called out if I take my dog on the train with me?

From the NJT website - “Only service animals accompanying customers with disabilities or their trainers, police dogs, and small pets in carry-on travel cages are allowed on-board NJ TRANSIT trains, buses and light rail vehicles”

If it’s you’re only way home and you don’t have a carrier, guess you’re gonna have to do what you have to do. But I have seen conductors chew out passengers who did not have their dogs in the proper carriers and threaten that they have to get off at the next stop. So you’d basically be rolling the dice if it may happen to you. And you’d be asking for trouble on a crowded train so test your luck during off peak hours.

I don't know which line you are taking, but the ones I use will not let you board if your pet is not in a carrier.

Amtrak only allows dogs & cats up to 20 lbs in a carrier with current vet records for an additional fee and not on all routes. It's also limited to 5 total on the train so if 5 other people are already on with a pet, they won't let you on.
