I find East Orange to be very scary.

Better off west orange if you can afford it. I personally wouldn’t want to live there

Try Bloomfield. Borders e.orange, a bit safer, and they have lots to do

I had to drop a friend off there and we ended up walking about 10 blocks. I saw falling down houses with people living in them, I saw crack viles in the street, saw a guy peeing on a building (daytime) and saw drivers disregarding traffic lights meaning like a slow roll left turn at a red light. It felt lawless.

I am not sure what you want. The crime rate is higher than West Orange, Montclair and surrounding communities mentioned in other posts. The schools are not as good. The rents are cheaper. Real estate is less expensive too.

I hope you will drive though and around these communities on your own so you can determine where you want to live.

West Orange and Bloomfield seem like good options and are lower priced than Montclair, safer and decent schools.

I guess if people are trying to dissuade you from moving to East orange, then that should be an indication of the neighborhood, but it it's all you can afford then do what's best for you.

But from the other direction * 😂 … okay now Im just playing w u but also isn’t is so expensive to live over there right now ? I’m looking to buy a home for the first time and I always dreamed of nyc Jersey city life but with current inflation and just peoples craziness after covid I decided to look more towards hunterdon county and just bite the bullet and commute to the city area

it is expensive but doable. the reason why i decided to work in nj rather than manhattan is the toll fee everyday and the commute snd traffic in the city but 40-45 mins one way is almost the say as going to manhattan with regular traffic lol

The Ironbound section and downtown are relatively safe, however they are probably significantly more expensive than East Orange at this point. I would suggest Bloomfield which is not far from East Orange and tends to be more affordable. Also look into Belleville but I believe they have sketchy areas as well.

I lived in South Orange for 10 years and I worked part time in East Orange then. Then I lived 20 years in Maplewood and the last 3 in West Orange. My children went to the South Orange/Maplewood school system. I never lived in Montclair but am pretty familiar with the Oranges.
