It can be a little sketchy. It depends on where ur setting up to live. Mostly sketchy tho

Better off west orange if you can afford it. I personally wouldn’t want to live there

This is worth your analysis:

Personally, I wouldn’t want to ever live in East Orange, but if this is the area your budget allows and you have some good common sense street smarts, you can keep yourself safe.
[deleted] t1_ix7trs8 wrote
No, truthfully avoid that whole area.
Zaiik OP t1_ix811lm wrote
omg. why is that?
Zaiik OP t1_ix817st wrote
how about ridgewood or montclair?
Zaiik OP t1_ix819j5 wrote
is it because of the crime rate?

i just wanna leave there because it is near my work

any towns near east orange that is safe?
sm0keythebear t1_ix85pm2 wrote
Try Bloomfield. Borders e.orange, a bit safer, and they have lots to do
Deep_fried_sourCream t1_ix85six wrote
Maplewood is near by. Not sure if the taxes r high over there, but it is a nice town close to orange.
RivChk t1_ix865so wrote
I had to drop a friend off there and we ended up walking about 10 blocks. I saw falling down houses with people living in them, I saw crack viles in the street, saw a guy peeing on a building (daytime) and saw drivers disregarding traffic lights meaning like a slow roll left turn at a red light. It felt lawless.
HeadCatMomCat t1_ix89pne wrote
I am not sure what you want. The crime rate is higher than West Orange, Montclair and surrounding communities mentioned in other posts. The schools are not as good. The rents are cheaper. Real estate is less expensive too.
I hope you will drive though and around these communities on your own so you can determine where you want to live.
West Orange and Bloomfield seem like good options and are lower priced than Montclair, safer and decent schools.

I guess if people are trying to dissuade you from moving to East orange, then that should be an indication of the neighborhood, but it it's all you can afford then do what's best for you.
Zaiik OP t1_ix8iflq wrote
if people doesn’t recommend it i wouldn’t go there but maybe some nearby neighborhoods?
Zaiik OP t1_ix8jje5 wrote
bloomfield maybe. i don’t know why people keeps saying east orange is not safe when you’re telling me it is better than where you live (montclair)
ljnj t1_ix8lh33 wrote
No they are telling you West Orange and Bloomfield are better priced and safer than Montclair, not than E Orange.
Zaiik OP t1_ix8uiaq wrote
west orange or bloomfield will be my best bet i guess?
Zaiik OP t1_ix8upv8 wrote
thank you. I will look on that area. i hope it’s not that far from east orange where i live

im currently in weehawken and its like 40-45 mins drive one way

But from the other direction * 😂 … okay now Im just playing w u but also isn’t is so expensive to live over there right now ? I’m looking to buy a home for the first time and I always dreamed of nyc Jersey city life but with current inflation and just peoples craziness after covid I decided to look more towards hunterdon county and just bite the bullet and commute to the city area
Ravenknight222 t1_ix90xj9 wrote
I even think you can commute direct to the city from hunterdon on nj transit
Zaiik OP t1_ix917e9 wrote
it is expensive but doable. the reason why i decided to work in nj rather than manhattan is the toll fee everyday and the commute snd traffic in the city but 40-45 mins one way is almost the say as going to manhattan with regular traffic lol
Zaiik OP t1_ix91f6j wrote
i don’t wanna work in the city anymore. lol.

West Orange.
South Orange is okay on the University side of town.
NatAttack50932 t1_ix9asfw wrote
Stay out of Irvington. Newark has safe areas and unsafe areas. It's a full city.
Zaiik OP t1_ix9etei wrote
how about crime side?
Zaiik OP t1_ix9ewwp wrote
is it the north newark the safest?
NatAttack50932 t1_ix9f9up wrote
The area around Prudential center in downtown and then the University heights near NJPAC are safe.
Zaiik OP t1_ix9ftk8 wrote
i will start looking for a house for sale/rent in that area. thank you
Plane_Psychology1111 t1_ix9lfzi wrote
The Ironbound section and downtown are relatively safe, however they are probably significantly more expensive than East Orange at this point. I would suggest Bloomfield which is not far from East Orange and tends to be more affordable. Also look into Belleville but I believe they have sketchy areas as well.
HeadCatMomCat t1_ix9t81l wrote
I lived in South Orange for 10 years and I worked part time in East Orange then. Then I lived 20 years in Maplewood and the last 3 in West Orange. My children went to the South Orange/Maplewood school system. I never lived in Montclair but am pretty familiar with the Oranges.
