I'm moving to the area and seeing some 2BR apartments that I really like, but they're on the upper crust of what I really can afford, so I'd be interested in getting a roommate. However, I'm seeing a lot of the apartments only offering one parking space, which may make it a lot harder to find someone to split the rent with.

Is a 2BR with 2 parking spaces a pipe dream? Should I let that dream die and just get one with 1 space and figure out street parking? I'm considering then just dropping down to a 1BR, but they're not that much cheaper?

Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated.

In my experience the standard is one parking spot, however I've seen many complexes offer additional spots at a monthly fee. It depends on the area, but usually people just go with street parking for the additional spot

master bedroom or parking spot was how me and an old roommate chose; He chose parking, and luckily our unit always had street parking outside so worked out for both of us.

Yes, depends on building.

I've been in places that included one spot as part of rent, and could get an extra space for an added fee, places that you had to pay for any spaces if you wanted them, places that only had 1 space period, and places that had no spaces.

All depends on the building.

Likewise i lived in a place with a roommate that included one parking spot.

The person with the spot paid extra rent, the other person took their chances with street parking. Depending where you live, street parking may not be a huge deal.

My mom parks on the street most of the year, and then I get her a spot for the winter so i only need to dig out the car for her once, and not every time the plow comes by.

100% depends on where exactly you are in montclair.

Answer will range from you can't do it period, its simple, or its available but impossible to find at certain times.

Of course. All depends on the place.

Last apartment I rented before buying a house, 2-bedroom apartments got 2 spaces and 1-bedroom apartments got 1 space.

If you're looking to have a roommate, imho I'd take the space myself but give your roommate a small break on the rent in exchange for dealing with street parking.

My condo does 1 assigned outdoor space, you can purchase a garage for extra $ per month (to the association), and street and “visitor” parking is available for the second car. Several people in my building have 2 cars (all 2BR units) but no one I know has 3+ cars.

Basically one spot close to the building is guaranteed mine, and roommate finds visitor or street parking as close as he can. Works for us.
