New Jersey is incredibly densely populated, and counts among its residents many Brazilian immigrants, who have opened innumerable barbecue joints all over the state. These restaurants range from small hole in the wall type establishments to exquisitely fancy and expensive. The Ironbound Neighborhood, in Newark, is the most common landing spot for Brazilian and Portuguese immigrants, and is thusly home to a very high concentration of these establishments.

Wichita? I've never had good barbecue in Wichita.

I do miss Dinosaur though. Maybe they're counting old Dinosaur reviews in with the reviews from the Ironbound.

Austin and Lockhart, Texas really need to be on this list.

As a KC native who lives in Newark this is laughably wrong.

Newark does have unique Portuguese BBQ spots that are worth checking out though.

KC bbq is overrated. go to Kimchi Smoke and get the brisket, and then you can come thank me later

I don't know. But I think if BBQ as ribs, brisket, pulled pork. They don't usually have all of those except maybe the ribs. Also Portuguese BBQ seems like stuff that's put on a grill rather than slow cooked all day. It's more tough and bland as well.

Aggravating_Rise_179 t1_ixwq148 wrote

So are we just going to throw out a different style of BBQ just because its not the American way... do we do the same thing with Indian or Japanese curry

Did you just come to r/NewJersey to shit on one of the hidden jewels of jersey? The only people who don’t know newark is the absolute bomb are the people who haven’t been or are scared of minorities

No.
As someone who lives in Cape May County, I came to ask about it. Thus the question mark.

Nice to see you keeping up the Jersey stereotypical “auto-defensive to any implied slight” attitude though.

There is no BBQ in Newark. Everything labeled “BBQ” is just rotisserie chickens lol. NJ does a lot of food well but BBQ is absolutely not one of them

There is plenty of BBQ in Newark. You’re aware there’s more than one type of BBQ, right? 😂

Grilling chicken over an open flame is not BBQ sorry bud

0

Standard_Tale7072 t1_ixrvi58 wrote

There’s multiple kinds of BBQ. By definition, cooking over an open flame IS considered BBQ. “…cooked out of doors on a rack over an open fire or on a portable grill.” So. 😂

3

sutisuc t1_ixrvmzd wrote

Uh huh. And there’s pizza in st Louis but no self respecting new jerseyan would be ranking that at a top list of pizza places nor consider it the good style of pizza

Standard_Tale7072 t1_ixrvv8j wrote

Doesn’t change the fact that you’re wrong 🤗 NJ factually has plenty of BBQ. You can argue till you’re red in the face, you’ll still be wrong.

That’s not even the same situation dude. Hahahaha. Acknowledging that NJ does in fact have BBQ ≠ saying other states not known for pizza have good pizza.

Aggravating_Rise_179 t1_ixx4suj wrote

Well, you are literally saying these versions of BBQ are not valid because it doesn't comply with your views of what bbq is... so why not go and teach them what is actually bbq if you are going to gatekeep
