Hi! I’m a female, young professional and I will be moving to New Jersey in the next few months. I’m desperately in need of some NJ locals’ help. My housing situation is overwhelming me right now, since I don’t know exactly what area I want to be in or where to look. I have visited NJ a couple of times and I did really like the Montclair area and vibe. Are there other towns that are similar to that city that you would recommend? If you could, please tell me why you’d recommend the city in your response, also. I would like to stay semi-near NY (around 1-1.5 hours away) and I’d definitely want to be in a relative safe area, where I could walk around at night alone.

I’m looking for a 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom apartment at the least. I’m mainly looking to live in an apartment complex, but I’m also open to a multi-family home. I will be living with my boyfriend and I’d like for our rent to be around $1,500-$2,700 if possible. Does anyone have any apartment complex recommendations?? If you have a recommendation, then please say what city it’s in and what you like about it.

Thank you in advance for your help!! I’m really in desperate need of it and would greatly appreciate it!! I will definitely take any other tips you have about NJ local life, too. I know it’s going to be a big adjustment coming from TN! 😊

Quiet cities with large vibrant downtowns are pretty uncommon throughout New Jersey. Obviously in North Jersey younger professionals flock to Hoboken, Weehawken, Jersey City due to amenities.

Morristown’s downtown is a little smaller than Montclair while Ridgewood is more expensive.

Extensive bar hopping or restaurant hopping won’t be an option in most other towns.

You can look into Morristown, nice walkable town with a good restaurant and nightlife scene. Would be a little further from the city than Montclair but a little closer to some good hiking and other outdoor activities.

Red bank is pretty much exactly that. Square mile town too so you can walk anywhere

I’d recommend Bloomfield or Metuchen. Both are beautiful areas with nice downtowns. You might also want to check out Kearny or Harrison if you want to be even closer to the city

Seconding Somerville! It's farther from NYC, but totally within your acceptable radius. Some of central NJ can be a bit more affordable than Northeastern NJ (the part closest to NYC).

Morristown might be similar to what you’re looking for. It’s a bit smaller than Montclair but very walkable, nice selection of food, shopping, and entertainment, and feels very safe for me (an anxious young woman) walking alone at night. It’s about 45 minute drive to NYC as well. Not sure exactly what the rent cost situation looks like though I haven’t looked there in a while. Although I’m pretty sure you could find something if you’re not looking for super big or fancy and are willing to go on the higher end of your budget.

If you want to move real close to NY you can check out Newport in JC.

I would suggest places like bridgewater, wayne, edison since they are very safe places to live in even with family.

Florence Park because u remind me of my friend and her bf who moved there. They are similar to how u describe yourself and your bf

*Florham Park is a sleepy suburb like most of North Jersey and is fully devoid of nightlife and walkability.

Most towns shut down by 8pm on weeknights.
