I am generally a four-seasons type of guy, and although I just signed a new apartment lease and started a new job a few months ago that does not allow remote work, I think I may be on my way out next year.

For lurkers who don’t live here, our winters lately are just not what they used to be, and I really miss snowball fights, sledding, and the feeling of the cold crisp air. We used to almost never have high temps above 40 degrees F unless it was a freak thing from December thru March.

Nowadays, we’ll get one or two week long cold snaps where the temps will be what they were all the time several years ago. The rest of the “winter,” high temps are in the 50s, 60s, and occasionally 70s every day, with heavy rain about half the time. I can’t understand why people celebrate this and are not sincerely worried. Why not move down south and save a heck of a lot of money if you want this type of weather rather than actual seasons? Jersey isn’t supposed to be like this, and it wasn’t until the past few years.

As I write this post, I am about to go outside in a flannel shirt and jeans with no jacket. My friend whom I’m going out with later is wearing a T-shirt and shorts and is not even cold, on December 30th.

I’m debating on actually leaving the state, even though I love everything else about it. It’s unfortunate, but I cannot control the weather. I can control where I live though. Anyone else thinking of doing the same thing?

I love winter, but I value the relationships I have in NJ too much to move.

There are also many reasons not to live in the south aside from the weather, which is way too hot in the summer. NJ is getting too hot in the summer, I hate waking up at 5:00 a.m. to run.

That’s my problem also. Everything I know is here. I have to decide whether I want to put distance between myself and those relationships to experience the winters I want, or to stay here and slowly accept the fact that any high temperatures below 50 degrees are going to be extremely rare from here on out. Neither of those is a pleasant scenario.

I don’t understand how people are celebrating this. I hope they like getting ravaged by mosquitoes as early as March, because that is what happens here now.

No, and you sound a bit silly.

Edit it was literally freezing all last week?? Even into the single digits ???? Also we’re only ten days into the season?

Not a winter lover so I’m enjoying this very concerning turn of weather as I hate shoveling and have conditions that flare in the cold. You’re right it is not ok but I am enjoying it anyhow.

Within 40 years, NJ will:

  1. Have a new coastline with the current going underwater for good.
  2. A region with the climate of North Carolina.

Yeah as a cooler weather lover I’ve been thinking about this for a while now actually. The weather is one among a few reasons why one day soonish I will most likely end up moving.

There will definitely be stuff I miss about NJ (mainly some friends and family) but I’m ready for a change in scenery , both literally and figuratively

It was basically a chilly spring day today if even that. 60 degrees on a December afternoon. And a week before we had frozen pipes and power outages.

It’s not that it was or wasn’t freezing. It’s that it was 50 degrees in the same 24 hours and we had people on this sub with a windchill under -10. And a week later we are in shorts with the windows down. I shut my heat off today and had to open the windows. That’s bonkers

I've thought about moving North a few times. The climate here is only going to get warmer and warmer. And prices are only going up. Not sure where, but one day, I won't be living here.

Many of my friends and acquaintances have retired to Florida or the Carolinas. Not for me! My focus is north….New Hampshire or Coastal Maine.

Sadly, it’s not much better in certain more northern areas as well. For example, Ithaca. Ew York is having highs of 50s this week. Climate change is slowly warming up even the coldest areas.

90% of the country was in sub freezing temps last week, and i was working outside at night — trust me it was cold.

it’s just a warm front passing through, it’s the end tail of our rainy season.

I’m not a climate change denier by any means , we have had some mild winters but I think it’s a bit too early in the season to say it won’t be cold this winter.

My goal is retiring in upstate NY. I feel like where we’ll be in our climate catastrophe at that point, that’ll be the area with the best mix of weather.

Keep in mind that the wildfires in the PNW have gotten worse every year. My best friend is from Portland and she had to invest in heavy duty air purifiers to handle the smoke throughout fire season.

Dude, we don't even really get snow or cold weather we'll until January anymore. Used to be that it would be about 30 by now. If you haven't noticed in the last few years that winter just kinda hits in January and February, I don't know what to tell you. This year's was the coldest Christmas I can remember in over 6 years.

My brother in North Dakota probably wishes it would get above -40 so he can shovel.

Harsh winters with no remote work option means financial struggles in the way of increased car maintenance, increased utility bills, more time for commuting and general shopping. Shipping delays.

And the upper north of the US typically have less money for snow clearing and pot hole fixing. They just shut down the economy until the sun comes out.

Instead of moving, maybe take a winter vacation to Maine or Colorado.

I lived in south Jersey until I was 50, then moved to southeast Wyoming. The wind chill the other day was -43 when I got up. I always wanted to live in real winter and near mountains..I haven’t regretted it for a second and I look around in awe at my surroundings literally every day. The only downside is how hard it is to find good ethnic food. I went from the suburbs in NJ to raising my own cow which is now in my freezer, fishing for trout the size of my lower leg 15 minutes from my house and hiking all over without seeing another person unless I want to. Absolutely love it.

Right? I want our true seasons back. I tight with this frigid snap we just had that it was going to be the start of a beautiful Winter. Hopefully it still is but now it’s foggy and warm. Too many folks in Jersey are happily cheering on the warmth this time of year. It’s not okay.

Yea I mean I moved to montana so being home for the holidays it wasn’t cold lol. That’s my point, compared to the actual cold states in the northeast and Midwest, that few day cold stretch was not bad for the extreme cold in the winter.
