Name of affordable towns in NJ?

Looking to rent an one room apartment in mid 2023, just trying to get an idea where to go. Can be anywhere in the whole state. Don’t bash me please. I know NJ isn’t the cheapest, but it’s what I have to work with.

Moved to Bumfuck nowhere, Sussex after living all my life in suburban Passaic. Can confirm that it’s more affordable here. Also there’s like nothing to do out here in Bat Country

I’m confused, are cities off the table, or are you just looking for small towns? Because with that price range you could possibly find an older apartment in places like downtown Jersey City, downtown Newark, Hoboken for ~2k or possibly less and you’d be less bored

I was just surprised no one else pointed out that you have some flexibility with that price range at least up here in NNJ. Most cities in NJ that have a large rental stock should have some apartments in that range.

So I’d look for cities you would want to move to and see what you can find. I think you’d have some options pretty much all over Hudson, Essex, and some of Union and Bergen counties despite these generally being the less affordable ones

There are still studios and a few one-bedrooms in Hackensack for under 2k.

I'm Northern NJ based. Rural areas like Warren and Sussex county will be cheaper. I'd imagine parts of South Jersey are similar. If you're looking to still have access to some amenities you can look at some of the "bigger" towns like Newton, Sparta, Hackettstown, Washington. They will all be pretty small though.

I grew up in Hackettstown (well, Independence and Allamuchy, technically). You can do worse. It's a cute town with easy access to major highways, NJ Transit has a stop there, nearby farms with great produce, etc.

Two great breweries (and a third just up 46) and some excellent dining choices as well.

I'm not sold on that train station though. Very inconsistent service. I'd trade it for a reliable bus to the Dover station.

I moved a long time ago, so I'm not up on latest dining options.

I believe that train station was only ever meant to serve the 9-5 NYC commuters, so I've only ever grabbed the train at Dover. The bus out of Panther Valley was also very convenient.

It’s a really racist and xenophobic area. It’s become marginally better, but growing up there in the 90’s was really tough.

Practically lived here since I was five years old. It’s OK but it’s expensive and frankly boring nothing to truly do and the businesses don’t survive.

Hate to break it to you but it’s not that expensive relative to other areas and not as awful. AC is cheaper but more awful. Hammonton is better but more expensive

ANYWHERE in Ocean county or north will be more expensive. Salem and Cumberland count are cheap for reasons.

What do you do for employment?

I’ve been interested in living that way for a while now. Namely Absecon. Smithville, AC, and Batsto are all close enough. AC and Hammonton would have me covered for interesting foods. It’s also pretty woodsy in a lot of parts. Not sure if I’ll pull the trigger, but the area seems pretty ideal for me.

If you're looking to be near the city in North Jersey, southern Bergen county towns like Little Ferry, Ridgefield, Moonachie will have apartments under 2K. Even a bit north in Hackensack, Bogota, Teaneck, Bergenfield as well. It's tough finding, but they're there.

Definitely look at the more rural counties in the state. Salem, Sussex, parts of Warren and Cumberland. Your options will be more limited compared to more populated parts of the state but certainly cheaper. I have seen some one bedrooms in Newton for $1,300.

Maybe even central jersey? I am not from there but I would imagine during the off season that is not the summer, rent prices would be pretty cheap.

Look out in Warren County. I nabbed 3200 square feet and 14 acres out here for $400k in 2020. Everything is so much cheaper out here if you don't mind being a little more "rural".

I know you're not in the market to buy, but it's just one show of how different it is from something like Morris County.

Trenton and South. From NJ tpk exit 7a or 7 you can be in Bergen County rt 80 in under 1 hour and in Philly in under 1 hr

Sure you can be anywhere if you work remotely, but if that’s the case you want to be in an area that has decent WiFi. Maybe close to a Costco or good grocery store?

Perth Amboy, Woodbridge Edison come to Mind

Depends on where you want to be and what you consider cheap. Parts of Monmouth County are affordable. Much more so than areas adjacent to NYC.

$125k is middle class. So is $150k-200k. If you have a household income under like $70k in NJ you’re lower class.
