I posted this in asknyc and someone pointed out the answers would be biased, which made sense lol.

I'm early to mid 20s who currently live in small studio in Midtown South for 2400/mo. The building is great with elavator, laundry in building, and doorman. Commute is about 20 mins by sub. I am also relatively close to the train stations and subway which is a great perk for traveling anywhere. I believe I lucked out with management as they have been responsive and reasonable and my legal rent only increased to 2800 this year.

However, I've also been touring some NJ apartments and found a beautiful 2B2B for 4700 near the waterfront and Path. I love the view of the city and spaciousness and I already have a friend who is willing to room with me. Laundry is every floor. While the area is light on restaurants, the place is very nice in terms of riverwalk. I'm assuming I'll save a ton on taxes and rent but Commute will double to 40-50 mins.

Lifestyle-wise, I usually come straight home after work which ends pretty late to stay in and chill. I do not like to party late during the weekend, but I do enjoy hanging out with friends who are mostly scattered around NY and NJ. At my current place, I currently cannot host anything bc of how small it is and it does feel lonely sometimes. I also a love NYC restaurants, but generally is a responsible spender as I just started my job. Key thing is I regularly travel to NJ once every weekend for a whole day of sports, which is currently ~2 hrs commute each way.

As of now, I am currently leaning towards staying at my current place just because of the hassle and the commute. But if anyone has some additional perspective for my situation, or have made the move, I would greatly appreciate it!

You say "Newport", but that isn't a town in NJ.

From context, I think you mean the Newport development(s) along the Hudson River in Jersey City.

I don't know what to tell you, but telling others you mean Jersey City (or even maybe posting in r/JerseyCity with some questions) might help some.

Newport is a town towards the bay in Cumberland county. Southwest of Millville and north of Fortescue.

If it’s not a town, I’m not sure what to categorize it, but people say they are from Newport.

The PATH train they speak about doesn't run there.

Nope. You’re right.

but You said Newport wasn’t a town in NJ. But it is. That’s all I’m saying.

Saying Newport is fine. I’m from Jersey City. Saying Newport is like saying Chelsea if you’re in Manhattan. JC natives specify where they’re from by saying their section. The Heights, Greenville, The Hill, Westside….

This is better positioned for the Jersey City sub.

As someone that lives in Jersey City and loves it, let me open with two points:

A) your friends in Manhattan will rarely want to commute out to JC unless they live directly on the Path. If you have friends in NJ, the hosting bit will be helpful. If you’re expecting your NYC friends will come over with the same frequency, it’s possible, but I’d say unlikely.

B) I will never go back to voluntarily having roommates - i’ve never had problems with them, but I enjoy my own place far too much.

If you’re open to roommates you should consider digging around Manhattan as well, but your overall payment is pretty great for NYC.

You are thinking about moving to New Jersey to pay almost the same rent you pay in the middle of Manhattan and having to share the house with a roommate? I wouldn't do that in my opinion, living with a roommate isn't something I desire especially if I'm getting home late everyday from work.

I worked in Newport for many years even though I lived exactly 1 mile away in Hoboken. Newport is the actual Matrix. It's totally sterile and void of character. Soulless. I hated it there. Many great options in downtown JC outside of Newport.

Thanks! Yeah I felt like Grove Street was much nicer in terms of the vibe but unfortunately they were out of units within our range

Grove is popular for obvious reasons but check out Hamilton Park & Paulus Hook too.

No. You should move to the Financial District. You'll love it there.

Thanks, why do you say financial district?

It's more connected and exciting than Newport.

Also, more well known. It's easier to get a room mate in fidi

maybe stay in nyc and look to join a different sports league closer to where you live?

you may have nice view of nyc from newport but that's pretty much it.

I’m jersey grown been living in nyc for 30 years solely to avoid the commute. I think if you can afford it that is usually the answer. Plus it’s more fun here for someone in their 20s/30s

JC kind of sucks without a car. I would rather live in manhattan personally, as would most people living in JC. Unless you’d be saving a ton of money i’d stay in NYC.
